Im turning 50 in October and first ironman affiliated race is superseal in march. They have me entered in 50-54 category. Is this a mistake or do they do it by birth year?

It’s age as at Dec 31 of the year you enter the event. I entered an event the day after my 59th for the following February and found was rewarded with a promotion to the 60-64 age group. Nice!

Pretty sure thats how most races/organizations do it. Your age as of the end of the year the race is in.

Yes, same for masters in cycling or masters in running (at least in France for this last one).

I think it is a USA Triathlon thing that Ironman aligns with. But, USA Track and Field goes by age on day of event (at least in the races I do). I don’t know what other countries do.
Certainly the same here in the UK for triathlons. Age as of 31st Dec of that year.
