Oceanside 70.3 gearing

I know, I did a couple searches already and most responses on this topic was 10+ years old, likely when spinning up hills was not as popular. There were recommendations of 53/39 and 11/25 or up to a 27 as sufficient. I am running 53/39 up front due to powermeter BCD 130 compatibility. So no compact cranks for this race. I did this race a few years ago on a 10 speed with 11/28 cassette and my cadence was 40-50 rpms for the 5 minutes up the first big climb with the 39/28. I recently upgraded to 11 speed and able to fit up to a 32 on the rear. Should I go for 11/30, 11/32, or stick with an 11/28 and just grind up at 40-50 rpms again? My power was 220-240 during that climb and my FTP was at 241 for that race. My current FTP is 251. I do remember people with compact cranks spinning past me as I was out of the saddle grinding.

I would at least put a 11/30 on. The difference between an 11/30 cassette and 11/28 is just the spacing of the 3 largest cogs. They jump by 3 opposed to 2. So you'll still have the same options in the middle of your cassette.

Piggybacking on this thread.

Anyone running 1x or run it previous years for this race? What do you recommend? Currently have option of 48 and 10-33 or 50 and 10-33.

I ran a 53/39 11-28 on 165mm cranks with an FTP that wasn't much higher than yours and was fine on all the hills.

I'd be more worried about my long term power production, ie, have I done the training to sit at xx % of watts for 2.5h with 3 surges of 3-6 min at 102-104% FTP.

That's the real question imo

Echoing this...I’ve done Oside 4 or 5 times...2 years ago did it with 52/36 and 11-25 and it was a griiiind. Last year 50/34 and 11-28 and that was fine but I’m going with the 11/30 too. Having that last gear going up heartbreak hill will be nice to keep the legs spinning and like Brian alluded to, keeps your overall power expenditure in check.

I did Oceanside once and used 52/36 with 11-28. At the time FTP was hovering around 4W per kilo and it was just right. Today I am more like 3.5 and would be better off with a 50/34 minimally with the same cluster.

Something to think about. I was under my average watt target last Oceanside 70.3. I wonder how much those surges really affected the rest of my ride. I think I am going to pull the trigger on the 11/30 for my 53/39 setup. I have a 52/36 and 11/28 on my road bike and that seems to suit me well for climbing. 39/30 and 36/28 ratios are identical when I crunch the numbers.
I was on 165 cranks last time and now I am back to 172.5s. I'm hoping that extra leverage may help some this year.

How will the 172.5mm crank arms affect your fit/position?

I got refitted with the 172.5 cranks and that position suits me better than with the shorter cranks.

That's unusual.

I ran a 1x11. 50T in the front. 11x30 in the back.
It worked out fine for me. 270 ftp. 165 lbs. YMMV.
