Universities nd Tri Teams
My daughter is in Grade 11 and is in the middle of looking at universities. She is a good enough swimmer to swim at Div 3 level but not Div 1. She also does triathlons. She is ranked number 2 in academics at her high school so we figure she has a reasonable chance at getting into a good university or college. She will choose a university based primarily on academics but would also like to keep up with sports. We know about some of the universities with active tri clubs. Any thoughts on universities with strong academic reputations and active triathlon clubs?

Like it was stated in the Naval Academy thread, that's a top notch place with a very active tri club.

But as was already stated, the military lifestyle isn't for everyone. I turned down RMC and went to civilian school for that reason.

Have your daughter check out http://www.collegiatetriathlon.org/. There is info about the collegiate triathlon scene as well as a fairly comprehensive list of schools with triathlon/multisport clubs. I've been a part of the University of Wisconsin tri-club <http://www.sit.wisc.edu/~uwtri/> for several years now and it consistently fields 50-100 members each year. It is a great social atmosphere for training and racing. I've met people from university tri-clubs throughout the country so hopefully your daughter should be able to find a school that meets her acedemic and tri needs.

Many of the Big state schools have active triclubs. Just thinking off of the top of my head some bigger clubs at last years nationals were: Colorado, Colorado State, Most University of California's, Florida, Arizona, Wisconsin, Hawaii, Cal Poly, Iowa State. This list is by no means exclusive, just some of the clubs that looked bigger. As far as private schools go I know Stanford and USC have big clubs but otherwise I don't know. I go to university of New Mexico, we have a club but its small.

Stanford has a very active tri club that was top three at collegiate nationals last year (http://www.stanford.edu/group/triathlon/) and was also where Joanne Ernst, Mike Garcia, Amy White, Andy Kelso, Barb Linquist, Eric Bean, Josh Dapice, myself and a few others got their starts.

Also, since your daughter might want to get some exposure to other fun club sports -- there is also a fairly large number of non-varsity clubs that are competitive. Have her check out:
