That layer of air on the women's suits is very noticeable while watching the sport on TV. What I also notice is how long the air stays there and doesn't "wear" away quickly.

Having a layer of air covering the torso makes for a faster surface over a large part of the swimmer. Air on water is perhaps as fast a surface as can be created.

Allowing guys the same suit advantage as the gals, if they so choose, makes a lot of sense to me.

A small digression: Is there another sport where men compete topless?

How do you see a layer of air trapped INSIDE the suit?

Then have them race in bikini's......it doesn't make much sense that men can't cover their torso.
