Heading out soon for the year end 10,000IM set. The goal is to do it as 25x400IM in 3:30 as the Nepean Sportsplex is only open for 3.30 hrs. To do this I need to hold 8:20 send off time for the first 15 and then 8:30 for the last 10. Based on this I need to get to

5x400 in sub 41:40
10x400 in 83:20
15x400 in 2:05
20 x 400 in 2:47.5
25x400 in 3:30

There is not much room for slowing down. When I get to 15 if I am fading too much I will flip to 20x200IM on 4:10 which should be more doable. Let's see. Wish me luck.

Further thwarted, traffic on Highway 101 has made the option of driving to Shell or Pismo beach to surf a really horrible idea. All because of snow 180 miles away on I-5. Even more thwarted, massive closed out sets in Morro Bay.

So, I just did some bike time and weights in the pain cave.

Haha, all this talk about snow and not being able to get to the pool due to traffic and being stuck in the pain cave, you'd swear you were typing from an igloo with us here in Canada!!!!

Ha. it is sunny and 65F all week here. But I spent the day in the yard growing flowers and picking fruit so I am confined to the pain cave in the dark. My beaches went from 10 minutes away to an hour away, just because of a couple of inches of snow on the Grapevine. It is really rough out here in Coastal California. Somehow, I'll find a way through it. Thoughts and prayers and stuff for me.

I just noticed your tagline: "Born a swimmer, borrowed a bike, laced up some runners,.... "

Mine would be "Born a runner, dad told me to bike everywhere because he as too busy to drive me, trying to become a dolphin in my 50's"

Swam with the Masters team again. SCY
Fun to go 5 seconds behind someone and just zone out/swim the set.

400S/200K/200P/8x25 on 30
6x100FR on 1:30 (1:14-5)
8x75 on 1:10 (55-6)
12x50 on 55 BK/BR (40-45)
200 easy
3000 SCY

Thinking about a year end challenge swim, maybe The Brute, but nothing as over the top as Dev’s 10k of IM (that’s 11k for us in US). Good luck and long push offs/glides on your walls.

Go for the Brute. That is way more fun than 100x100 or my stupid 10,000IM. The Brute is fun in the same way a 10km run is fun... Your are racing wire to wire. 10,000 IM at my speed is a survival contest and trying not to fall apart...very much like a marathon in an ironman

After my "day off" yesterday, I was hoping to XC ski today but with freezing rain, after getting sucked into stuff at the office this morning (should have been a day off, but you do what you have to do when its your company), I ended up at the pool with 45 minutes to closing time. Some quick math told me that I would have time for an 8 minute warmup and try the Brute but as 200 fly - 1500m free - 400IM (I wanted to go hard in the 400IM so went for it last....I spent way too many of them a few days ago going as easy as possible)

During the warmup, I was kind of getting excited about doing this and hammering out the final 400IM after having to exercise patience all day two days ago.

So ended up at

3:40 200 fly
25:34 1500m free barely holding 51 seconds per 50m
7:35 400IM

Total was 36:49

The 200 fly felt like death after 125m, the 1500 free first quarter was also like hell, but the middle and back half were awesome. The 400IM felt GREAT....I literally felt like I was in a standalone race once I got through the fly section.

After this I hit the gym and did a treadmill run that was 8 K long and a 20 min spin!

Gave the Brute a go today.
300FR (3:58)/300K/300P (3:46)

Brute splits:
200 fly (3:10) not bad. Stayed smooth
400 IM (6:12) back felt good, free rough
1650(23:05) never could find a rhythm.
Total: 32:27: Didn’t race it, but was a good effort/tough swim. May try it again later in season.

6x50k on 1:15 (58-62)
4x50IM on 50 (37-46)
Total: 3650

I detect a January Brute Challenge is looming!!! Congrats...solid day for feeling like crap during the free leg in the 400IM and during the 1650 free.

This event is really a 300 fly-100 back-100 breast-1750 free "IM" event.

Nice job there, that would have won the event this year in our age group. I gave it a shot awhile back on a whim, but the pool was just too hot and I had to bail 1100 into the free. When I do it again it will definitely have to be in a cold pool, as that 300 fly gets you hot quickly.

I too am looking for something to do maybe on Wednesday, but looks like all the pools are closed. Maybe Thursday I will do that set that Jason posted up from Sutto's old days, 120 50's on the minute, IM style. I was thinking I might do the frees on the 50 and the rest on a minute, and then some kicks on the minute too, just not to get too bored. But I haven't swam much because of all the running lately, got in today for 40 minutes after doing two runs!!

3x100s@1;40(1;30 to 1;28)3x100IM kick@2;10(1;58 to 1;54)
2x500p@7;00(6;44/6;43)
4x100IM kick@2;10(1;58's)
5x50s@1;00(43's)
2250SCY all super easy

Pool is finally open!

3300 SCY
Sunny, windy, 57F
Solo swimmer in Olympic pool + 2 Lifeguards

100 Free
200 Kick
Ladder (100 0:10, 200 0:15, 300 0:20, 400 0:25, 500 0:20, 500 0:15, 400 0:15, 300 0:10, 200 0:05,100)

Had google fail in the ascending 300.
Had cap fail in the ascending 400.

Sheesh. Fortunately, I was well equipped.

The intent was to get faster on the descend, but the equipment failures made that too easy. But, I did get faster... Except for the last 100, which I just used as a cool down.

15 minutes aqua jog
5 minutes egg beater

Too much freestyle for a 3300. Mixing it up next time.

Next time I am at the pool I plan to do 60x50m as 10x (fly-free-back-free-breast-free). This way I can use the free as a bit of recovery after the back and breast legs. I need recovery after fly too, but at least I have more time than after the breast segments.

300 Fly... LOL

That's what I called a 200 Fly final followed by a 4x100 Medley Relay back in the day.

If I ever had that setup, I'd sucker one of the guards into doing lap cards for me and I'd do repeat 500s or a mile for time or something

Ha. It won't last. January 1 is near....

Today's swim:

2800 SCY
Sunny, windy windy, 55F
A dozen fellow swimmers

500 Warm Up
4 x {100 Kick; 250 Pull (drills); 100 Free (fast); 100 IM (fast)}
100 Cool Down

10 Minutes Aqua Jogging
10 Minutes Egg Beater

I've added sunglasses to my aqua jogging attire. I'm going all in on the look.

Last swim of 2019. Total: 96,433 SCY (equivalent). I didn't swim at all from January - July. Had I know I was so close to 100k I would have done one more swim or two. Oh well.
