There's no reason they couldn't have set up redirects. Really really bad practice to have your old, well-ranked, high value URLs just disappear from one minute to the next.
Aesthetically, it's a nice improvement. I also appreciate the data points presented on each race page, like the course type, temperatures, and airport (yay!). The Races page is much improved, with a fast performing fuzzy search - meaning, I can type in "Canada" or "Cana" and get all Canadian races, without having to use the Region dropdown. Also, results are better, with a smarter filtering system that is chained (vs the old one, which required you to select an option from all three dropdowns). Also, the mega menu presents the most pertinent information (races, categorized - on mobile too) so you don't have hunt through pages and sub pages.
The biggest issue is that they didn't keep the navigation structure the same so for regular users, it requires a (re)learning curve.
Overall, I would say the site is an improvement and that those hating on it are just exhibiting classic change aversion.
