Reason #35 why the Bay Area is the greatest place on earth to live. I got in a leisurely 8 miles along the SF waterfront this morning as the sun was coming up and the bay was glassy and flat without a breath of wind. T-shirt weather at 7am. Gonna be 73 and sunny today.

15 miles to the south in Half Moon Bay men are riding the biggest waves in the world.

We got it all.

The photos on the website are really good. Damn, it looks cold. Awesome though. I wish I was there.

You'll get a better view on the webcast.

The reef is over half a mile off shore and the nearest viewing spot is a military communications facility and is closed to the public. About 100 people can fit onto a small unstable patch of cliff adjacent to the base....but thats almost as dangerous as the surf.

The water here is damn cold, I'd say 50 degrees right now and you get a really heavy wave. I used to live at Ocean Beach and quit surfing there because it stopped being fun. Getting hit by that wave is like getting hit by a truck, it hurts.

Environmentalists say that over crowding and parking for the day is going to destroy the grass.

Some pictures from today: http://photos.signonsandiego.com/...ery1.5/mavericks2006

Not the biggest I've seen there, but that's a powerful wave.

Ah heck, they protest anything here.

Matt: Probably passed you this morning. I was running the same place between 7:30-8:30.

I grew up surfing in So. Cal. I miss the old days when it wasn't crowded. Anyway, even when I was surfing 28/30 days a month, I would not have been able to handle waves the size these nut jobs surf. It's very scary.

Also, why are these people protesting stepping on grass? They should just smoke it...
