New Ironman 70.3 in St. Petersburg, Russia Announced for Summer 2020

Here's the story: https://www.vedomosti.ru/...597-triatlon-ironman

Mass participation triathlon in Russia is relatively nascent, but booming. St. Pete is a great town to visit, so this should be an event to keep an eye on.

One interesting element: the piece notes "WTC sells Ironman licenses for about $ 300,000 per competition."

I would love to do the race but given my job I don’t need the hassle associated with setting foot on Russian soil.

Maybe someday.

Would be awesome. Having lived in SPB for 10 years this is great to see, it will advance the sport greatly. SPB is now more easily accessible to foreigners than ever before for most nationalities (sadly not Americans, Brits and Australians though!!) due to the new e visa regime recently introduced.

However, I do not think the route is great, there is really so much potential to use the sights of the city to make an iconic race but unfortunately the choice of route will not achieve this IMO. A swim around the Peter and Paul fortress would be way better than in the rowing lake and the run should be around the city center. So a bit of a shame not to recognise the full potential.

Having visited both I'd say the Russian city is much more interesting with an incredible cultural history and architecture.

Registration page is up: https://www.ironman.com/im703-st-petersburg and registration opens December 16th.

I am from Saint Petersburg, go back there form time to time to see family and friends. Will have to make this a priority :).

Triathlon scene is growing rapidly in Russia so this race will be a popular one. Looking at the maps, the only issue might be the bike portion with the wind coming from the Gulf of Finland but will give a nice boost coming back into transition. Otherwise looks like it will be a nice spectator friendly race.

If you have any questions about the city or travelling in Russian in general, please let me know. I will try to answer the best I can.

Ironman would have to change the rules to allow him to compete shirtless.

I wonder if WTC plans on being the visa sponsor.

Just so we’re clear, population-wise, this “town” would be second in the US after NYC (https://www.moving.com/...ities-by-population/ , https://www.geonames.org/...ities-in-russia.html).

Can all athletes dope with impunity at this race or only the Russian ones?
