Blood Blisters in the Mouth
I hate to interrupt all the penguin hitting, Lance bashing and general boyz bull****, but I have a serious question.

Anyone ever have them? What causes them?

So, I rode 85 miles today (and btw--it was a GORGEOUS, sunny, 60F day in NorCal). I don't think I ate enough (common for me). What I had on the bike was:

3/4 large bottle of Accelerade (yuck)
1 large bottle of blue Gatorade
a couple of squirts of Hammergel
one Powerbar
All the above were while riding.

Only 3 short stops--first one to buy the Gatorade and use the bathroom (5 minutes)
Second one of about 10 minutes--drank a Coke, ate what was about 4 Fig Newtons and a bag of salted peanuts (craving for salt).
Third one of about 5 minutes to slam down another Coke.

Got home and started to eat a sandwich and drink a Red Bull and felt something funny on the roof of my mouth. The next thing you know, blood is gushing out of my mouth and a huge blood blister had popped. Yuck!

Any idea of what caused this? Route was hella hilly (out to Pt. Reyes for you locals), but I rode nice and easy (no speed records set).

You say that like it's a bad thing. (<--joke)

Nice ride ... 85 miles.

Q: Why drink the cokes? As a fellow soda lover, I'm not condemning that, just wondering since they can [1] make you more thirsty, and [2] can produce gas (i.e., stomach cramps).

--------------------------------

As for the blisters, when you ride do you unconsciously push your tongue against the roof of your mouth, creating friction?

A quick sugar hit as I was getting a bit of the bonk. I generally never drink sodas otherwise.

Don't think so. And today, my tongue was hanging out trying to breathe on all the hills.

Weird. I could venture to guess that:

a) The roof of your mouth was irritated by your choice of foods.

b) I don't know.

See your dentist.
