Calgary 70.3 who's in?
I have been in Calgary looking after my sick daughter while she gets a stem cell replacement and decided to enter since I will be around for a few more weeks. I did a ride on the bike course yesterday...seemed really fast for the first half but the headwind on the way back was pretty tough....could be deceptively challenging.

I live in Calgary and will be doing it for the first time. 3rd 70.3 overall. Wind could definitely be a factor, but looking at past times it is a fast bike course. It's also a couple km short of 90.

Looking forward to it!

I'll be there. How you describe the bike course is pretty much how I felt on it last year: zooming along for the first half on barely any watts and then it felt like riding through molasses.

I'm in for my eleventh time - someone from ST has to do them all. Even after Whistler on Sunday.

The swim and the bike on this iteration are a joke and short. Expect a PR on both and don't get caught up in drafting on the road.

The run has an hill that you'll want to plan for, there is aid at the top, but don't feel any shame if you have to walk it.

Good luck, feel free to ping me if you have any questions.

What's the water temperature in the lake? Is it usually a wetsuit swim?

Thanks!

Believe I read somewhere it's usually wetsuit legal. Just did a triathlon last weekend in a similar type of lake close by and the water was 20 degrees. Most people in wetsuits, few weren't.

The morning temperatures have been around 11C most days recently so even with daytime highs going up to 24-26 I would doubt that the water gets warm enough to ban wetsuits.

It's also usually 3 weeks earlier in the season.

The magic number is 24.51 C. I read the race guide, ITU / TriCan rules. So if it gets warmer... Swimskins are allowed but the sleeve rule is in effect. But the letter of the rules you have to wear a sleeveless swimskin and you have your top rolled down under.

So this race has different swim rules from all other IM races? Non-wetsuit races allow sleeved swimskins and tri suits above the elbow. I've never heard of a race requiring sleeved suits to be rolled down under a skin.

Non - US races typically their NGB/ITUrules. You might see Ironman ask for some expectations like sleeves. This is the ITU rule for middle/long distance races. They don't allow swim skins in short course events period.

USAT/WTC have some very unique rules that don't generally apply elsewhere:

1. Warmer non-wetsuit swim cut offs.
2. Wetsuit optional/no awards on the swim. (Ironman rule guide specifies that only US races have this policy. )

I have seen people pack their stuff up and leave when told it's a non wetsuit swim and they don't want to take it off.

If it's getting close, I'll get a precise answer since the WTC rule is in conflict with the ITU/TriCan rules.

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about. The Calgary event guide is pretty sparse, but I would assume the rules are similar to the most recent Victoria 70.3 event, which the event guide goes into much more detail. As far as I know it's the same as the US Ironman events, and other Canadian Ironman events.

https://www.ironman.com/...ete%20guide%20rs.pdf

0 mention of anything to do with sleeved swimskins. I'm not familier with ITU rules, but this isn't an ITU event.

It's sanction by Triathlon Alberta/Triathlon Canada. The technical officials will be from Triathlon Alberta. They use the ITU rule book.

I have done Calgary before...albeit 4 years ago now. As far as I know we used the WTC rule book. It is a WTC event. There was no difference in wetsuit cutoff to any other wetsuit legal race I have ever done. Surely someone can tell the officials what they have to enforce?
In other news, I did query the fact that the athlete guide says they have 30 slots for World 70.3 Champs in Taupo. According to IronMan (in more than one place), every 70.3 has at least 40 slots...unless they have more, for whatever reason. They did reply to me and were “Happy to learn we have 40 slots!” I’m glad I asked, because that would have turned into a giant cluster on Sunday.

WTC is the race organization not the sanctioning authority. The try to behave like a governing body when they really are not. I could see the swimskin / sleeve thing being exempted since both rule books call for 100% textile (that said I can't see them checking all the suits to ensure that are not the pre 2010 ones that have polyurethane). But the whole notion of wetsuit optional/no awards is unlikely to happen.

Do you know where I can purchase a one day license? The link that the Calgary 70.3 people sent only takes me to the annual membership. I also checked the triathlon Alberta website, and same thing, I can only see the annual membership.

Emailed Tom about the swimskins, he replied in less than 10 minutes, "ITU rules" was his answer.

Makes no effing sense at all. IM branded race under IM brand rules, yet the RD independently decides to use ITU rules. Keep in mind, this race has nothing to do with ITU. Was it also draft legal on the bike?

IM branded races are typically sanctioned by the national federation and most of those follow the ITU rule book. The ITU has different rules for middle/long distance than Elite / Draft legal. The RD obtains his insurance and race sanctioning from Triathlon Alberta/Triathlon Canada. Sanctioning bodies determine what rules are in effect and provide officials.

I wasn't too bad. Toe covers, softshell vest, and neoprene dive gloves. I don't think I took in enough calories and bonked hard on the last 7 k on the run. While I didn't feel terribly cold I think there was an energy cost out on the bike and I failed to give a cushion. I also waited until I was in a hole to change my strategy. In hindsight I should have taken a but more on the middle part of the run when I was slowing down.
