Do disc brakes actually help me stop faster?
I locked up my brakes racing on Saturday and skidded my way into an oncoming car

My first reaction after recovering was to swap out my carbon rimmed wheels to disc wheels. Since disc wheels should slow me down faster, right? And if I slowed down faster, I wouldn’t have been hit

But since I was skidding, would disc brakes have actually helped me?

Tell me more ...

Skidding sounds like you locked up the rear brake. If you'd grabbed the front really hard you probably would have done a face plant.

In other words, no.

You were able to lock the wheel, so braking power wasn't the issue; it was modulation. That said, discs are slightly better; the main advantages are modulation and no issues with rim heating.

In your situation, the answer is no. Brake force does you no good of it is greater than your traction. Some might say yours was a "modulation" issue but, IMO, panic stops don't really allow for modulation unless you're a very, very skilled rider.
