I've resisted chiming in on this thread for a while, but your continued ignorance has given me no choice to wind up typing up once.

First: the vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction of the race path. This is no longer considered part of the course. Ever. On most courses, you will have traffic traveling in the opposite lane on a consistent basis while athletes are still on course. This includes both Ironman and non-Ironman branded events. Hell, you have numerous courses where the roads are not closed to traffic, period. Ever.

Second: There is NO WAY IN HELL that there was a volunteer behind the wheel of one of these vehicles. Volunteers might drive a personal vehicle in support of the event, but anything that is performing official course duty, like clean up, is not going to be piloted by somebody who isn't covered by a whole metric crapton of insurance.

Third: no, cleaning up cones "can't wait until all athletes are off the course." Permits have strict timing associated with them in order to return roadways to their normal conditions. This requires expeditiousness. A vehicle traveling in the opposite lane of the race cleaning up barriers is a damn near requirement in order to get a race approved and moving along.

You are entitled to your own opinion. You are not entitled to your own facts.
