Leg strain
I have been running a few times a week, 5 miles each time. I noticed a little nagging strain on my left calve on the last run. Rolled it out with “the stick” and took yesterday off. I ran a local 4 mile run today and during the run I could feel it, but it wasn’t bad. Near the finish the ran a little quicker and the pain came on pretty quickly. My calve feels tight now.

What’s the deal? Anything to avoid this stuff, it happens often to me and I have never been able to get my mileage past 13 miles when training for a full Ironman. I’m hoping I can eliminate theses strains and get my mileage up.

What help can you offer?

I’m planning to just roll out the strain, ice, and ibuprofen.

That’s called a “niggle”. Fix it now (rolling, stretching, massaging, time off, whatever) or it’ll be a MUCH bigger issue later.

That would be me. Haven't been able to run last 4 weeks due to calf strain. It's slowly improving but my test run this morning only lasted a quarter mile. Going to be a DNS for Steelhead. Refocusing on August. If there were "do overs" I would have shut it down as soon as I felt it and treated it aggressively.

Thanks. Did some google searches on niggle. Found lots of additional info. Essentially info. In line with what I was planning. Good to know I am doing the right thing. I am going to skip my Tue run and I will try to run We’d on the cross country trails instead of asphalt.

See a PT or massage therapist.
They can do things you cannot to your legs or other issues that are causing the pain.

Rolling, ice and Ibuprofen only treat the symptoms.

They can work out the knots or work on the scar tissue that's forming if you had a micro tear or something happen that you are healing from.

Calf strain; I have one right now as well. Micro tears in the muscle dont run on it let it heal. Normally can bike, swim but be carful pushing off the wall. If I am jumping rope and doing calf raises I dont get calf strains. This one was a reminded that I have not been doing those things. If you come back to soon and try to run on it only makes it worse.
