A jet blew me off my bike!
Click bait? Wait. I know some of these people.

I’m afraid to even read this.

https://www.sanluisobispo.com/...rticle231401303.html

SLO cyclist says a jet blew him off his bike. Now he’s suing the airport

My take away, I will master my bike handling skills so as to never find myself in this situation. And maybe being a little overweight helps keep me grounded.

if it matters: he was on a recumbent.

It matters. He's lower to the ground. If he can get blown over, what hope do the rest of us have?

The requisite beard for a recumbent rider must have been caught in the jet wash.

How are you gonna master your bike skills to avoid this situation? By my reading, the jet engine blast seems pretty strong and knocked more than just this guy, but several other cyclists. BTW, have you ever been near a jet engine blast? If you have not, it's no joke.

It is a 1000 feet between the tail of the jet and the road. If the jet blasts sideways it is ~500 feet. I don't know much about about jets, but we just graduated from puddle jumpers here and our jets are little (as in, the carry-on bags don't fit in the overhead and are checked plane-side as you walk up the steps to the plane door).

That said, I'm going to ditch my diet so I stick to the planet better and lean into the jet blast. Getting blown off your bike by jet blasts is a pretty cool story though. Way better story than hitting a lip in the road.

I was just about to make this same post. 1000 feet away, he's not feeling that blast....

During run-up of engine no. 3, large sections of asphalt overlay were broken loose and blown aft, with pieces striking both upper and lower surfaces of the stabilizer leading edge vertical fin and body in the area of the auxiliary power unit inlet."

I guess I'm not sure about that.

At 200 feet the exhaust velocity at max throttle is down to 240 km/h from 600km/h at the exhaust nozzle and 483 km/h at the tail end of the plane. Based on that decay rate, by 1000 feet you might feel a small gust.

It was a group ride. I'm betting there was a small gust of wind, maybe helped by a little bit of jet wash, someone touched wheels and everyone went down. And of course, people can't be responsible for themselves so they've gotta sue someone.

More nuggets:

"...
  • After arrival and while taxiing into the gate, an airplane blew a nearby helicopter into a parked airplane...."

You would think the helicopter is parked at least a couple of hundred feet away.

I know this is ST and internet, but you don't know these people, so why the need to doubt the story and inject the social commentary? From all we know and understand jet engine thrust, it's possible, or even probable, the jet engine blast caused the accidents.

It's possible, I suppose, if the conditions are weird enough, or if the aircraft was closer to the road than it should have been. My old route took me past an airport, and I don't recall ever being affected by the jet wash in the least, rode past plenty of planes getting ready to take off. And none of my friends, so far as I know, were ever affected either. So that's why I have my doubts.

That said, I probably shouldn't doubt that they are sincere in their belief that they were affected by the jet wash. So for that, I apologize. I just doubt whether that's what actually happened.

This happened to a buddy of mine many years ago on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, little different situation though. At then end of the run way, there was an F/A-18 waiting to take off, rare for that airfield but we'd see them occasionally. The road off the runway had a red light for cars to stop when aircraft where taking off or landing. As we rode our bikes to work, for some reason my buddy decided he wasn't going to wait. That F/A-18 hit the afterburners and he was blown not only off his bike, but the rode and well into the grass, completely peppered with road debris as well. Needless to say he nor anyone I ever knew attempted that again. That might also have been the hardest I ever laughed in my Marine Corps career.

Actually, it's really not possible at 1,000' from the aircraft. You were misreading from the link you posted. If you google jet engine safety zones, you'll see that the jet blast 1,000' away is going to be pretty negligible, especially from a business jet which is probably only in the 20,000 lb thrust range (if that).

I actually do know the people. Do you the volume of dust this would create? It is a dry and dusty field. He would have suffered sand blasting.

Suspect.
