Big data has mastered behaviour modification

Thus sayeth Jim Basilee the inventor of the smartphone.

It would appear to be so. Look at teenagers glued to their phones. Big data drives the behaviours that profit gambling, porn and a host of other more savory businesses.

Absent a ban on personalized ads during the next Canadian election campaign it will change the outcome.

Yeah, Canada doesn’t have that pesky free speech thing that us crazy muricans have.

Good luck with that.

So Blackberry guy asked our government to ban ads and they (as far as I read) made no decision whatsoever, that means we don’t have free speech?

Contrary to Duffy's ill-informed subsequent posts you in fact have less freedom of speech than the US in Canada although relative to places like Cuba, North Korea, and Venezuela you have more.

I reject the premise. No, "big data" has not "mastered" "behavior modification."

(visualize me making almost continuous snarky "air quotes" with my hands)

i'm ambivalent about the article. i'd read it against someone like evgeny morozov on our tendency toward techno-utopianism (or fatalism) and the trend of lazy, uncritical hand-waving about concepts like "big data." what is big data? who is big data? is it some autonomous actor, or just a pile of numbers that can be used for any number of ends?

targeted advertising has existed for years - companies run ads in magazines or neighborhoods or in languages or colour schemes or time slots designed to hit their target demographic. so the difference with targeting on social media is one of degree rather than kind.

as for kids these days being glued to their phones, it's a problem. and it definitely seems likely to create a lot of mental health pathologies. i suspect we might see a backlash or a great 'unplugging,' at some point - as soon as the new prestige pattern becomes disconnectedness, only the lower classes will have to be online all the time. and yes, young people in the 80's were glued to their walkmen, but those didn't interact with their users and were simply an extension of the radio or record player. so w/r/t smartphones, that does indeed feel like a difference of kind.

election meddling is already illegal (or should be) in most jurisdictions, so it seems the issue is more about having the ability to investigate (not easy) and stones to enforce the law.

finally: nobody has free speech. even though jesus moved to america to invent free speech, americans today are still curtailed in cases of: copyright, child porn, obscenity, disturbing the peace, incitement, uttering threats, libel, slander, hate speech, harassment, prisoners, the military, government employees, doctors, lawyers, and . . . etc.

I personally think adults are as hooked, if not more hooked to there phones then kids. I know adults are far more hooked into Instagram, twitter and facebook then teens.

That's just what the deep state wants you to believe. So they can keep chipping away at your FREEDOM!!!

So you are either part of the deep state or you have been brainwashed by the deep state.

Sad.

I think the best part of this post was all the tracking bs in the link (I added a space so hopefully it wont shorten it)

Ahhh, the art of the random, nonsensical, inflammatory one liner!

For reference Jim Balsillie speaks about it in detail on this interview, quite interesting:
