Rim brake pad neglect
While back riding in N GA and going down long (for me) double digit hills, it felt like my brakes were not working that well. To the point of thinking about buying that new bike with disc brakes. After reviewing disc brake care, I realized that I had not cleaned my brake pads in two years while in FL.

Thank you ST for your article on rim brake maintenance. You confirmed that one could use rubbing alcohol to clean the pads.

"Make sure your pads and rim surface are clean and free of any debris. Isopropyl alcohol works well for this."

Laying them on concrete, pouring some rubbing alcohol on them and them rubbing the pads against the alcohol remaining on the concrete worked better than a file. The concrete acted like a grindstone.

Looking forward to the next ride and I'll add this simple fix to my regular maintenance.

PS also wiped off rims with a little alcohol too.
