The very unofficial Oliver Half Ironman thread

Temperatures are looking HOT for Saturday's events but a bit milder for us who are doing the half on Sunday. Any other ST volk doing it?

I'll be trying to finish on Sunday. Racing is not in the cards for me yet

My first race back after screwing up my back reherniating a disc in my back around this time last year.

Just trying to dust the cobwebs off and my family loves staying in Ossoyos.

At least it'll be a dry heat....

A few years ago I got tagged by a car. That was the genesis of the injury. It cropped up last year again after Oliver.

Well, technically it popped up after a sprint race I did 2 weeks after Oliver.

My advice: Don't ever get hit by a car. Even at low speeds. I've never been the same since. It's like it bent my frame.

On a side note: What I've found that personally saved my back was Foundations Training. My bike was posted for sale because after being broken for 6+ months I figured my time racing was over. I did it for a few days and the difference was damn near instant. After a few weeks of it I was able to start doing short runs and rides again.

in for Sunday. haven't done this race since 2008 and have low expectations. Looks like quite a different bike course than what we used to do and seems like quite a bit of elevation gain. Hope the lake is warmed up as Okanagan and Skaha are cooler than normal at this time of year.

I hope to be there
swim is always nice (although a long run to t1)
new bike course is a huge improvement over prior years. Probably one of the best half bike courses anywhere IMO (rolling with one short climb up Fairview)
run course is ok
should be a hot one!

I second this. The new bike course is way better than the old one. It's a bit more challenging, but way better view, less traffic, and no so boring

Anyone here staying at Walnut Creey in Osooyos and want to give a fellow athlete a ride on race day morning?

My wife and kids would be eternally grateful....

I'll be down there on Sunday, and hopefully Saturday morning, wearing my sling and giving out right handed high fives! Should be a beautiful weekend for racing!

No wetsuit for the Olympic today...likely the same for half tomorrow.

Not if I can help it. Hydrosloths need all the buoyancy they can get. = skin-toned wetsuit (shhhhhhhh).

so turned out to be wetsuit. Bike course was very hilly and thus very fair. also carnage on the run with that heat. Thought was running decent considering the conditions but turned out to be my slowest half mary ever! Hope everyone survived today.

That was a windy bike as well. Indeed slow run times were the order of the day

care to give a brief report on the day?

It's been 10 years but I loved Oliver and I love the valley. Looking forward to a return to _THE_ IMC for coaching when it returns a little further north.

Thanks :)

Keeping it short.

  • Rolling start for the swim - yeah, no drama, just smooth.
  • Long - ass run from lake to transition 4 minutes.
  • "What's that sound?" 1st 10 K of bike.
  • 2 min diagnosis of sound.
  • 80 more k of riding in the hills and wind, and yelling "gel, gel" to no avail.
  • 110 minutes of 90 degree heat playing cat & mouse with my age group friends.
