Interesting Swimming Drill

For those that don't click through, basically swimming in a very narrow channel. Minimal margin for fishtailing, you have to rotate a lot... downside is that it looks like it would encourage a straight arm pull.

Seems non applicable for 99.9% of swimmers With how that’s setup. I’d have a hard time figuring how how to create too bulkheads to swim through without actual 2 bulkheads and ability to swim with them in that manner.

In the latest “practice and pancakes”, they went to IU and filmed the breaststroke group there. I discovered a new drill, the Karla. Think I’ll incorporate that into my repertoire. Doubt there’s much crossover to freestyle though.

Just move a lane rope closer together or make a long string of pool noodles.
His spearing arm or reach is nice and stable as the s-a recovery (which is exaggerated, but good to do that) comes around.

Go to your local pool tomorrow and let me know how that goes. I'm not saying it's not a great drill. I'm saying it's very hard drill to do for most athletes in the real world. Those who have closed pools or maybe some master's programs could.

Just regular old lap swimmers- yeah no dice with this drill.

I was swimming last night like this. You can simulate by just doing touch thumbs or (sort-of) catch-up. I swam about 400M like that and it took me a bit to find my balance and rhythm.


You want to establish a nice long keel or edge on each side (L-R) pointed straight down the pool. The stroking or pulling arm acts like a paddle off that skating edge.


I swim with a long slow stroke. I'm often alongside swimmers with ~2x the stroke rate. Sometimes I try to slow my rate even more and use stroke technique -see if I can still move past.

Would guess this is a drill for their sprinters. Developing a straight arm freestyle with little body roll/hip-driven freestyle. Used to see my sprinter teammates in college doing similar "narrow-swimming" for those purposes. Ah the life to be a sprinter, while we are over yonder doing 6k sets :D

Way better uses of your time unless you're already swimming 10k+/week (goal dependent).
