2019 Argon 18 117 vs 119 rec?
I know there are a lot of factors to consider, but price being about the same... would you recommend a 117 with carbon wheels (Zipp 606 firecrest) and ceramic pulley, chain and BB OR an E-119 tri stock (not the tri + and stock wheels, no carbon)? To provide some perspective, I’m in year 2 of tri’s, done 2 IM70.3 with another planned in June. I do have the goal of full IM potentially in 2020 (depending on how goes maybe 1 yearly or every other year). All that said, most of my races are between Olympic and 70.3, so trying to determine if I would be better off with the 117 and upgrades OR go 119 and just ride stock unless 70.3 and rent wheels. Thoughts???

If it were me I would go with the E119 you can always upgrade wheels later (buy some used ones) and race on the stock wheels. They should be good enough for you to race on unless you think you need that extra % to qualify for Kona or something. Just my two cents.

I looked at both these bikes. Geometry is quite a bit different per my fitter. 117+ fit me much better and went with that. Love it.

Are you buying new? Both the last 119 and current 119 come with race wheels. The current one coming with HED Jet 6+. The 2017 model came with Vision Metron 55s. So you're going to get race wheels with a 119 if you go stock. The 119+ comes with Jet 6 Black wheels.

It is brand new 2019 e-119 tri, which comes with vision trimax 35kb (it is not the Di2 model, which comes with the jet plus 6). As mentioned, it is not the tri+.

Ah yeah, I purchased the Di2 model. Forgot about the wheelset on the mech.

Would love the Di2, but that definitely brings $$ into the equation

Great to hear you’re liking it... can I ask if you’ve done 70.3 or 140.6 (any races longer than sprints) and if so, did it perform well?

Made same choice last year. E119 vs e117

Opted for the e117 with Di2. Mainly because
-breaks are much easier to work on yourself
-UCI legal so I can do pure TT with it
-going e117 I could afford Di2 (and HED jet9+disc)
-as lovely as fully integrated cockpits are, they are a pain to work with if you are your own mechanic

Love the bike, no regrets

I have the e-119 tri and enjoy it. The one I picked up came with those Vision TriMax 35kb wheels and, for whatever reason, I hate them. I already had a set of carbon race wheels but I rode on the TriMax a few times and they just felt sluggish even compared to other training wheels I had... YMMV, just wanted to throw my N=1 out there for you.

No question it’s an awesome bike, my test ride was great. If I already had carbon wheels, it would be a no brainer... I’m just getting caught up in that I would have to roll stock on such a great bike and wouldn’t get its full potential

All distances, including Ironman. Have etap on it. It will serve you well if it fits.

I've ridden both

I would get the 119 and here's why
I believe the 119 with a disc over on the stock wheels will be as fast as the 117 with the ziipps
The 119 is faster than the 117 as per Argon's Wind tunnel testing. Probably enough to compensate for the front wheel difference.

I would eventually get a better front wheel and then you are faster. You will then have a good set of training wheels and racing wheels. A front flo is not that expensive.

The 119 brakes better than the 117.

The cockpit : while integrated is pretty easy to work o n and I am not mechanically inclined.
There were several bars on the 117, some where not so good.
I can never get the 117 or Nitrogen brakes to adjust properly. But I am not mechanically inclined.

What I like about the 117
I could put any cockpit I want, but that's $.
It's UCI legal

The 119 has no visible cables. I know it's stilly but I hate dangling cables.

So for the same $ you would be as fast as the 117 with Zipps, but with more potential to build from

Where are you ?

Think I’m going 117 with wheels and ceramics... now the wheel decision - Zipp firecrest 808, Zipp firecrest 606 or enve 7.8???

You are going 117 over 119 to save $ and going with Enve 7.8 ?

That’s what I’m considering for the bike, the question is on which wheelset

IMO, there is marginal performance difference between a HED,, Zipp, Flo or Enve wheel.

It it's about the fastest configuration, I'd take a 119 with HED over a 117 with Enve. Hands down.

Not to mention a 119 with alu brake tracks will brake way better than a 117 with Carbon clinchers.
Granted they were not Enves, when I tried a 117 with Carbon wheels, braking was less than spectacular.

Update — I decided to stop by LBS to look at Trek Speed Concept and it is definitely more bike than the Argon 117 and I felt was better than or as good as the Argon 119 and at a pretty less price (over $1000). Adding Zipp firecrest 404 front/808 rear.... thoughts on this setup and switch from Argon to SC?

When the 119 came out, it was wind tunnel tested against the SC and came out on top. However I think that was with a previous version of the SC. I don't know if they did any aero improvements in the latest iteration.

Hard to go wrong with the SC however. At $1000 less.....

From a Tri perspective, do you like the firecrest 404/408 or straight 404 wheelset for race and every day. I’m looking at zipps but open to others, enve, hed and flo have been mentioned

I personally prefer an aluminum braking track so use HEDs.
I have not had good experience braking in wet conditions with Carbon.
You can get a set of training and racing wheels for less than the price of a set of Zipps.
I prefer to have different training and racing tires and swapping is too much of a pita.
