In search of lost time aka Remembrance of things past

Has anyone else read 'In search of lost time'? I decided to read it since it is supposedly one of the best, if not the best, novels of the 20th century.

I'm on my second attempt and am now up to the third volume of "The Guermantes Way".

First time through I gave up part way through "Within a budding grove", but thought I'd regive it a go, Probably the hardest thing I've read in terms of keeping at it. Much more of an endurance exercise than training for or competing in an ironman!

Anyway, does it get better or is it a real slog the whole way through?

I find myself really getting into it at times, but then the narrator's neuroses and amazingly detailed inner monologue takes over and I find it a real struggle to pay close attention to what I'm reading,

What are other challenging books people have read? I've read James Joyce's "Ulysses" and also gave up on that the first time through.
