I awoke to this news early this morning. All of us who knew him will miss being lifted by his kindness and warmth every time we were in his presence.

Here is a website started by Mike and Scott Tinley, where you can learn about Mike:

From the late 70's for over a decade, I got to be around Mike at just about every race there was. He inspired me to start the first Triathlon newspaper, "Triathlon News" back in 82. I realized what he was doing with the "Running and Triathlon News" was groundbreaking, and it was dam hard. He always had kind words and encouragement, and I remember him handing me water bottles out on courses before there were even aid stations.

We went separate paths in the 90's, but I always keep an eye on what he was doing. In the past decade, it was a pleasure to see him once again at races and events, he had not changed one bit from his enthusiastic self from the old days. He took up the mantle as our sports historian, a badly needed and neglected aspect of our young sport, and for the love of it.

I will miss you Mike, but remember you always. You touched so many lives for a very long time in our little world, our memories of you will live on and on...

My condolences to Mike's family and friends. I'm very thankful for his work in growing our sport. I'll pull Iron Will from the bookshelf this evening.

You nailed it Monty. A great historian for sure and an eloquent writer.

Just met him once but communicated electronically. Touched that he would even spend some of his life's precious moments with me/us.

Very sad to hear this news. Still in shock to be honest as he was always so present when you spoke with him.

I first heard about a guy named Mike Plant while I was growing up in my Dad's shop back in the early 1990s. Fast forward a couple decades and I was able to meet the man directly, who everyone kept speaking out. Over the last 8 years I had the pleasure of being a customer of his through his MPA Event Graphics business. Every show I was at Mike would stop by, give me a big hug and see how my tents and equipment were holding up. Such a warm, pleasant and dedicated man.

Reading the piece about him on the front page, this part stood out the most to me and I couldn't have been happier..."He could’ve been whatever he wanted. Instead, we got him." Triathlon is ever the better because of Mike Plant...a legend in himself.

Mike and I announced the 1990 ITU World Championship at Disney. What a great guy. Got to know him during the Bud Light USTS and he was always a professional. Still have all the copies of "The Plant Report" - the ONLY way to get the inside news on triathlon BEFORE the internet. Prayers for his family - He will be missed.
