Pickup Truck accessories

So I moved to Canada from australia. Australia doesn’t have pickup trucks - utes are about as close as I am familiar with.

I purchased a GMC Sierra 2005. $3000. Has 150k km on it but in pretty good condition. Minimal rust on the running boards is about the worst it has. Mechanically sound.

Just a beater to shuttle mountain bikes and stuff really. Thing has a turning circle of a cruise ship....and uses about that much in gas (petrol) def not a daily drive

For those North Americans who own a truck - what are the top 3-5 after market accessories that make truck life better? Under seat storage containers? LED bed lights? Cooler? Tail gate pad for bike shuttles is already on the purchase list.

Thinking practical things - not chrome and go fast parts. Not fast and the furious...

Good tires

Tool set

Hi-lift jack if you get off pavement at all

Winch & bumper if you get onto rough trails at all

Keep it simple.

Around here a pair of truck bed racks are quite handy. You know, the ones that construction guys put on their trucks, I use them for boards, kayaks, and just moving stuff that can be strapped up above. They are actually very cheap if you buy them online and install yourself, saves 100's of dollars that way..I got a good pair for I think 80 bucks, just have to get over drilling holes in your bed rail...

I am not a fan of the truck tailgate pads for carrying bikes. Too much risk for me long term. Would rather just get a nice hitch mount since I'm sure the truck has a hitch.

It really depends on what you need the truck for.

My last truck I had one of those diamond plate tool boxes across the bed. It was awesome and very handy. My current truck has a roll 'n lock tonneau which I love, but again, depends on what you're using it for. I'd love a headache rack too but those aren't compatible with many tonneau covers.

If you guys don't have trucks in oz... What do construction guys drive? Vans?

I have the same year/model. Mine is in great shape yet. figure it is good for 5 more years or more, but may want a bigger truck for towing RVs.

I added a backup cam since they were not standard in 2005.

nerf bars came on mine, but if you don't have them it makes getting in easier.

I have a simple bed mat (surprising it was made in my small home town 600 miles away.

I have a nice topper. great for keeping things out of view and dry. Next truck I will be looking for more of a tri fold model so it can be out of the way if I want to haul something.

some utility straps can be handy to keep loads, lumber etc from shifting.

I wish the radio had Bluetooth or USB connections. I have to go with one of those simple fm wireless transmitters to play songs from my phone.

Snow Plow..

But really so many options, depends on how you plan to use the truck. Some might say a 5th wheel camper, or at least a pickup bed camper. But I don't think you want to turn this into a vacation use thing.

You forgot 24" zip ties, contractor grade garbage bags, and bleach.

Or was that list for the "must haves for owning a cargo van"?

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." John Rogers

very similar to the one on this ford. http://www.leer.com/750-Sport

First truck I had a full topper.

Next one I plan to get one that folds out of the way.

Today was the first time I actually took it off since I put in on 14 years ago. it was actually pretty easy, just 10 mins with 2 people. Take out 4 screws loosen 4 clamps. and it lifts off. 15 mins to put back on. So maybe ill take it off more often in the future.
