Bursitis (update at end)
I crashed on my bike Sept. 20. It seemed like minor road rash and I was back on the bike in less than a week. About two weeks later, I started to get what felt like a muscle knot in my shoulder. A little pain but no biggie. I kept riding, and massaged it plus I go to a pro for a massage every three weeks as well.

After about three weeks, my shoulder was really painful and I decided to stop riding altogether. The pain did not subside and I finally went for an x-ray in december. Nothing unusual at all in the shoulder or neck area. That doc gave me a 6 day pack of methylprednisolone, Within 12 hours, I was feeling nearly perfect. After the 6 day pack, the pain slowly crept back in but it never got as bad as it was before the steroids.

I went to a shoulder specialist in February and he diagnosed bursitis of the shoulder. He told me to take anti inflammatories, ice, and start PT (which I was doing on my own as much as I could handle). A month later and only very minor improvement and that is with daily naproxen intake, which I normally poo-poo. Now I am going to a pain doc on Tuesday, thinking that I should push for a cortisone shot to bring the inflammation down. So I am at the 6 month mark or so for this and very frustrated. I was getting in hill climbing shape and that went quickly south for the year.

So, anyone deal with this? Any doc with recommendations or thoughts on cortisone? Thanks.

*edit: not a swimmer

I forgot to mention that my right thumb had become slightly numb over this period as well. It still is not quite normal. Doc said that the inflammation is pinching a nerve.

What do you do for work? Sometimes its not the sport that causes the general problem but an accident from the sport is the catalyst... Leaning on your chair, armrest in the car, repetitive motions during work, etc. can actually be a more contributory factor.

My job is not labor intensive nor do I hold a certain posture for long periods. The issue coincided with my accident.

Get the Cortisone, I had a bursitis near my knee due to ITB Syndrome, cortisone was good got me going again for several years. 5 years later I did let it flare up again and ended up with an operation and now 2 years on can run a no issue

Thank you for telling me your experience.

After the shot, did you return to running right away, go through PT, etc?

Yep right into it, maybe took a week off to let the injection settle and then started to build run volume slowly over the next 8 weeks. It felt really good instantly so the battle was to not go out and go hard just be patient and slowly build volume like you should.

Great thank. I am currently riding my mtn bike on MUPs, no hands most of the time. Sounds crazy, but it allows my body to be in a position with no pressure on my shoulder: very different than my road bike position which is too aggressive for me to be in for any amount of time.

Best of luck to you.

Give it a go, sounds like you are in a bad way. Think about how many of these shots football players get, often mid game, worse case scenario it doesn’t help you out and you move onto the next option. Just get it done under ultrasound with a good person as it’s important they hit the bursa and you are getting it targeted.

Get cortisone shots. Had should bursitis for 2 months. Got the injections in both shoulders and I was back to full training in 1-2 weeks. No issue.

So I received a cortisone shot , oh, about three weeks ago. I wish I had done it much, much sooner. My shoulder is in a much better place and now PT is making it feel better.
