How much can I expect to improve my HM time in 6/12 months
Quote | Reply
After my last IM which ended with a bit of a death march, I vowed not to do another one until I could significantly improve my run.

On Sunday I ran a standalone Half marathon to get a benchmark and ran 1:54:02. I have signed up for the exact same race in 12 months time with the intention of improving as much as possible in that time. I just wonder how much I can reasonably expect to improve in that time. Last year I ran a total of 500 miles, and since January I have run 20-25 mpw. So a pretty modest amount of running. I now intend to build up to 40-50 mpw with a Barry P/Full assed challenge approach, and hold that until October when I will have another go at a half. I like to have a target time in mind as a goal, but I'm not sure what to reasonably expect I can achieve?

Any ideas what sort of time you think I might be able to get to going from 20mpw to 6/12 months of 40-50mpw?

Thanks,

Will

I was a decent athlete in hs and college, but then didn't do much for a while. Eventually I started doing a bit of running, but nothing more than 20 or so miles a week. For half marathon prep, I'd do a few runs of over an hour and then wonder why the last 5-6 miles were so painful. I was amazed that people could run so fast.

Eventually I began to take things seriously, and in about three years went from running a half in over two hours to right around 1:20. This involved bringing total training hours up to an average of 10-12 hours over the course of the year, but 15+ for tri season. In the off season I'd focus on running 40-50 mpw over the winter. I've found that it's all about consistency - there really is no off season - just a time to focus on a weakness.

BarryP works, my progression for reference:

Year, 13,1 Pace, Training Pace, MPW
2016, 9:14, ~10:00, 20
2017, 7:29, ~8:50, 35
2018, 7:00, ~8:10, 50
2019, 6:17, ~7:40, 60
I'd guess ~1:45.

Kind of an open ended situation.

If you train the same for the added miles, at the same pace, you might get faster, or stay the same.

If you train with speed work, tempo, long run, you'll get faster - or at least in theory you should.

Everyone is different how they respond.
Way back when, volume got me faster. I maintained that speed and ramp up when I need to. Ran a HIM run in 1:39 with 25ish a week. Wasn't killing it, but all the time I had to work with.

BUT, getting faster on the IM run isn't about training to run faster...

Thanks for the info. That’s really interesting to see your yearly progression. And the fact that it takes consistency over years to gradually improve. Funnily enough, I did wonder why the last 3 miles sucked so bad. The last mile was just horrible. Glad it’s not just me.
Thanks,
Will
