To disc or not to disc
Ive searched a lot on google and here and a lot of data seems that disc wheels although faster are marginally faster (say a few watts here or there. Even inputting the data on best bike split over the course of a relatively flat IM course it only said about 20 seconds over 60mm wheels. I have heard that there is a sail effect but can it not be measured? Ultimately worth the price? Interested in peoples feedback! Thanks......

also does it get any better than slow twitch and march madness?!

Discs make riding in cross winds a ton more fun. What would normally be a blah day in average to windy conditions turns into sailing on the open road. I grew up sailing a lot and the push you get from a disc reminds me of being out on a lake, tacking back and forth and having some fun. I'll get comments from other cyclists that say they bet I'm having trouble with it on a windy day. I say back that it's actually a total blast and I love it.

Thanks, my big question if its really only a few watt difference than the 2500$ price tag is not worth it, for me at least. Is it more personal "feeling faster" than studies? Can't really be measured?

You can measure it and manufacturers measure the drag in a wind tunnel. Discs are faster.

Ill agree I dont see the value at 2500, but lots of discs can be had for well less than half that brand new: renn and Flo come to mind at 700 bucks new.... not to mention all the used ones out there...

Plus, how can you put a price on whomp whomp whomp?

My story about it being like sailing... that's all with a $80 wheel cover from wheelbuilders.com. I have a 808 rear with a Powertap in it. I put it on, leave it on until it comes apart a few years later, repeat. Been doing that since 2007.

Ditto everyone else: always a disc. They are a lot faster. And, if you are spending $2,500, you are doing it wrong. I would not look past a HED, FLO, or Renn disc at a fraction of the price and all (or more) of the performance of a stupid-money disc.

Why are you only looking at paying $2,500 for a disc? At that price I would agree with you but...You can get a disc cover for $100 or a used Flo Disc for under $500. HED Disc for under $800. Renn Disc somewhere in between (or maybe cheaper if older model).

Edit-I didn’t even see above post before I wrote this but our advice was the same which might tell you something useful.

Thank you all for the advice. Never thought of the other options so good to know. Just saw what new discs were generally going for. Appreciate it very much

If you live in europe, also look for the citec 8000.
Less than 1kg, Structural, around 1000€, clincher, aluminum braking track.

I had the same questions as you did, but I followed Slowtwitch advice and bought a disc. I first went out expecting to be disapointed.
Well I was not, it really transforms the bike, you feel more efficient, you want to push more...next morning was very windy, I was expecting to fall of the bike...but then again I was surprised, it felt awesome and safer than my previous 38mm rear.

As others have said, get a disc. Get a used Flo disc. It’s a pretty bulletproof wheel and as you look for them if they still have the black brake track it’s relatively unused. Most people only use their disc for racing so they’re usually quite low mileage.

Or the even cheaper option of a disc cover.

I bought an Aerojacket wheel cover for under $100, converting my Flo 60 to a disc. It’s lighter than a disc as well. I don’t know why anyone would drop $2500 on a disc. That’s insane! There are way cheaper options available.

I dropped 2K for the new Roval disc. Do not regret it but I fully agree way to expensive with virtually no gain.....I call it an impulse buy just because it looked damn nice:-)

I looked at that but since I have a disc brake bike it says its incompatible.

Aaaah, that is a bit of a qualifier... Unless you really want to empty your wallet, or are married to the whomp-whomp sound of a solid core disc wheel, then the HED Jet Plus Disc wheel is an absolutely no-brainer. That is probably the fastest and it is also one of the cheapest. IMHO, the only reason to spend more on a disc wheel than the HED is if you have a very strong brand affinity, or must have the solid core sound.

I just went out with it again and I find it a really stiff and light riding wheel (not to forget fast). I have a 26MM turbo cotton on the back and the comfort is fantastic. Still the price.... I bought 4 Roval wheels Disc, CLX64 (rear and front) + a CLX32 for windy conditions. I used to have DT Swiss and I my opinion is the Roval's have a better feel when I ride but maybe that is just in my head. When you go for the Roval negotiate they give discounts! I got the disc for just under 2000 USD.
