Ventilation in Bontrager WaveCel Helmet?
No article addresses ventilation, and the Bontrager website does not address ventilation, either. Huang at CyclingTips comments that Koroyd was poor at ventilation.... but he then fails to compare the ventilation of Koroyd to the WaveCel helmets. I assume he hasn't tested it; he expresses skepticism about ventilation in the comments, citing the lack of air channels.

I don't see why the WaveCel material can't be limited to being placed solely under the foam material of the helmet. I'm not convinced the WaveCel material is that useful when placed in the vents of the helmet, as it seems it will primarily be pushed through the vent upon collision.

I don't think it will be that challenging for Specialized and Giro to release $300 helmets with similar safety, better ventilation and lighter. That said, the Bontrager WaveCel is a new benchmark in safety - no one will care if a helmet is lighter or has better ventilation than prior models by the same company if the new design doesn't compete in terms of safety with the Bontrager WaveCel.

I had very similar thoughts re. ventilation and the need for the material across vents.
Perhaps it's needed for stability of the structure. E.g. the large, vent-voids, change the dynamics of how it flexes / absorbs force.
Or, perhaps, it's an aesthetic / technology showcase.

The above poster has eschewed traditional employment and is currently undertaking the ill-conceived task of launching his own hardgoods company. Statements are not made on behalf of nor reflective of anything in any manner... unless they're good, then they count.

Good points.

I'm going to think it's your latter point: aesthetic showcase. And, maybe their marketing team even saw it as a form of conspicuous consumption.... that's giving them a fair amount of credit.

They have a 'cage' that rests against the head, and then the WaveCel is sandwiched between and glued to this cage and the foam. It seems that would keep it in place structurally. Maybe they tested this....? If so, would be nice to see in a white paper or that published paper on the helmet.
