Serious question, what's Beto's appeal? It seems like he has some hard core fans and I'm not sure why.

One of the biggest criticisms of him is that his policy stances aren't particularly deep. It's easy not to get into the weeds when you don't have detailed policy ideas.

My take on O'Rourke is that he's a semi-charming guy, in a kind of goofball way, without a lot of actual solid ideas. Kind of the ADHD candidate. We'll see how he does when he's got to really campaign against the heavyweights during a Presidential primary season and election.

I suspect it's more that he has been carefully filtering himself and/or his voting record to prep for a presidential run. Obama did the same thing.

I don't think "careful filtering" are words anyone would use with O'Rourke, based on what I've seen. He's pretty all over the place, and doesn't seem to have much filter at all.

Allow me to use some of your own words:

Why go into the weeds when the average Joe really doesn't care what brand of weeds you're cultivating. Effectiveness as President has nothing at all to do with the solid ideas put forward campaigning whether primary or election. Assuming positions on issues to separate from others is often just bullshit. He is the Bobby Kennedy of the 21st century. If you hear him you believe. Semi-charming quality says he is not quite the bullshit "full on" charming of a reality TV star. Semi-charming says he is not not an ugly dolt like most of us. Semi-charming is what we all aspire to be if we are young and what we wished we were when his age. I'll light a candle and say a prayer for this man to persevere against the pol heavyweights. Biden and Sanders each have been rode hard and put away wet too many times. This will be a generational election not favoring the old warriors. There is a freshening wind with this guy. I have no idea how effective he will be, but I have faith he won't be as bad as the current office holder. Any leader's worth is how he inspires his followers. This man has that skillset. There is a clarion call for citizenry to be inspired and do what is good for the country. Forgotten will be the bitching about what the country has not done for them. He can sound that call with confidence. I wish him well.

Yeah, dog whistle to the OAC crowd, then shift center.

Well, for a presidential run it's also wise to hold your cards close if you don't want the modern press to be blaring out a story for weeks about how you flip-flopped or how you broke some promise or whatever.

I mean ffs look at Bernie getting hit with the "crazy old man" stories just because of a cut on his forehead and his usual bad hair day. I don't think he cares, but Beto probably does.

Bernie is done....

You make a valid point. There are more than a few who speak on the TV who are in rapture. It could be similar to the TV folk's coverage of the Donald in primary season. What are you to do to change? One tribe tunes to Fox, the other tribe tunes to CNN, love flourishes while criticism flourishes. Whoop de doo.

There is no way Beto gets the nomination.

There is no way a rich, white (culture appropriating) guy, gets the nomination. The dems have become the party of baby killing, antisemite, socialist, women.

If Trump wins in 2020, it'll because the dems alienated too many Jews and African-Americans.

I was more so originally saying Beto was more relatable than most politicians. Sure he came from privledge, but so do 99 percent of politicians.

Givin today’s environment I am not going to say that relatively betos parents were extremely rich and extremely powerful. Sure his parents were 1 percenters. Even betos today’s networth of 10 mil doesn’t put him at tops of lists. More so I think he is more relatable than others like Bernie Sanders, Biden, etc.

I am not saying he is a carbon copy of avg American. Just more relatable than other politicians

I wonder if there will be a thread started about how “unhinged” Beto critics are and that they only go after him because he’s mexican.

One more gentlemen's bet. Mr. My name confuses all 'cept Mexicans and Irishmen will have more threads and more postings than Miss AOC. Unhinged in love and unhinged in criticism in equal measure.

One thing he (his volunteers) was was relentless/persistent about was using "volunteers" to text people (Lupe) about rides to the polling places, the nearest polling place, and a follow up from vote.org stating voting is public record and they know how "you" voted and if "you" voted. I received at least 8 texts in the last 3 weeks/12 combined from Beto's volunteer and vote.org. After the election, not a word from either one.

I hope Lupe voted for Cruz!

There are quite a few people coming from CA to TX. One day, things may change.
