Oh...it wasn't closed when I went through (it was well before 5)...it's just that after nearly 500 riders had gone through (~400 Wafers and ~100 Waffle) there was naturally a lag in what was going on. Previously I had been one of the first 100 or so through those areas.

I had to make a compromise choice on my bike this year and I chose gearing over tire size.
If I come back I may just do the Wafer and bring my gravel bike.
Will see what date they pick next year...
