But a good long life and a hell of guy from what they were saying this morning on our local sports talk radio (Preds announcer Pete Weber knew him).

He was a legend around here when I was growing up and playing boys hockey in the late 60s and early 1970s. He represented the team's first golden era, because the late sixties and early seventies weren't all that great for the team, that's for sure. Fortunately, we had guys like him and Gordie Howe to look up to and try to skate like and also to get us through until Steve Yzerman and Mike Vernon and all the others came along.

I was lucky enough to casually know him. He and I worked out at the same gym for a few years. An ice rink had a gym upstairs and I used to take a late lunch and work out in the afternoon. He, and a few other Red Wings, used the gym in the afternoon.

He was always friendly and would give autographs, pose for pictures, etc. A very gracious man.
