He's good. He's played here a number of times and recorded his album here at Studio A with the very talented Dave Cobb.

Wasn’t expecting that voice to come out of that person.

Good stuff.

I was actually expecting a picture of a bearded Johnny Cash with a man-bun.

Never heard of him, but wow indeed. I really liked that.

And his dad is Brad Wall? Former Premier of Saskatchewan. Damn, this is a small country...

Good stuff.

Son of former Saskatchewan premier for the past 11years.

A bit of an internet stretch, but one rumour is that his dad retired at 53 because his son was getting so much shit on social media about budgets etc.

Anyways kid is 23,

Maurice

"You have obviously never heard Johnny Cash. "

I've listened to a lot of Johnny Cash. I watched the movie, and I write and perform music. One of my old bands used to play Ring of Fire.

Maybe there's a lot of deeper cuts that I'm unfamiliar with, but quite honestly the only thing I see these two having in common are baritone voices and a quasi country/folk style. Other than that, I don't see any similarities.

Cash wrote songs that told good stories with very catchy, memorable melodies with a very clean, deep singing voice.

This guy, OTOH, is more of a poet with some good, yet dirty guitar work, and a voice with a good emotional affectation to it.

I may be wrong, but its also possible that I hear more nuance that separates the two that others wouldn't hear.

Again, sorry to shit on Sphere's point as this is really more about "look, this guy's pretty cool," and I agree, he is.

EDIT: Listening a second time I can hear more similarities......but then once I'm about to agree, I hear two many differences. Still good stuff.

Music, in particular the country genre, is about storytelling, and this kid paints a classic outlaw country picture with that voice and songwriting. It's a little distracting that he writes in the southeastern U.S. country tradition (Appalachia) while hailing from the Canadian plains, and that his stories and voice don't jibe with his age and experience, but then, that's probably true of most good country artists. He sounds like a guy from the Missouri hills who's been sucking down Camels and bouncing around the barroom circuit for the last twenty two years, and he's barely college graduate age.

I've been immersed in good country over the last few years, and mostly because of the authenticity of the artists and their work. Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, et. al. but I'm really enjoying this kid's work. I'm planning to see him on his run through Virginia.

Regardless of his (did)similarity to Cash, which is in the ear of the listener, I guess, yeah, he's pretty good and what he's doing.

I've listened to this one maybe twenty times in the last week. Didn't realize it was a Townes cover, or that I heard it live at Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' show.

I go to a Bluegrass festival every September (been to 5 or 6 now) and he would be an awesome fit on the main stage as the sun has just set.

Which festival? I'm probably going to catch him up in Ardmore, but I think he or Childers is playing a festival in that area late summer. I've been searching their respective tour schedules and have the dates mixed together in my head.

Oh, nice. I lived there part-time (Bluemont, adjacent to Berryville) during grad school. Beautiful country out there.

If you want to make a day trip to a really nice mountainside brewery with great views in that area, check out Dirt Farm. My favorite brewery in the area so far, and there's quite a few to choose from.

I can see how many people would think of Cash after hearing this guy. I just watched a few Youtube videos of this kid, lots of comparisons and comments about Cash.
