Garmin Connect IQ Orphaned Data Field
I have an 820 that I am retiring other than for Aeropod duty. Battery life has degraded significantly and it has a bit of a fog around the edges.

Switched to a 520 since the touch screen on the 820 causes more problems than it solves.

I have a Connect IQ data field app in my 820 that I really like. But this app is no longer in the Connect IQ store. So I can't download it to my new 520. Is there any way to get a Connect IQ that is on device over to another device? I can't see any way to upload a Connect IQ app to my 520 other than through the Connect IQ store, and my favorite app is no longer there.

PS I know Garmin issues, as evidenced by my crap 820, but between my Aeopod and owning tons of Garmin mounts, I am committed (for now) to the Garmin ecosystem.

I don’t have my 820 with me, but I think it’s name is Di2 Clear Gears. Super simple, it displays your current gear position in a “X:Y” format, where X is either 1 or 2 (1 for little ring, 2 for big ring) and Y is 1 through 11 (1 for your biggest cog, 11 for your smallest).

I just find it a “nice to have” - lets say your approaching a stop light. You glance down, see exactly the gear you’re in, then click whatever number of clicks will take me to the exact gear you want, never needing to peek back. Also can be a reminder not to cross- chain.

This CIQ data field appears to provide this info: https://apps.garmin.com/...a6-ac26-141686b0ca40

Yes, I think that's the next best option at the moment. Here it is in the upper right of my 520's screen:

Sure it's super easy to read in this photo, but for me at least, the numbers are very small with my Garmin is sitting in front of the stem. The /2 and /11 are wholly unnecessary IMHO, as I know how many chainrings and cogs my bike has. All this format does is make the numbers quite small. Clear Gears would display this combo as simply 1:4 and I know I'm in my little ring and 4th largest cog. This also means that the numbers are much larger (i.e. legible), the same as the other nine data fields above.

This is clearly a First World Problem, and I'm not losing any sleep over it. But it does seem odd that I have a Connect IQ app on an old Garmin, and there is no way for me to have that same Connect IQ app on my new Garmin.

Can you plug into computer grab the file from the correct folder and then place it in the “new” folder on the 520?

With the “20’s” Garmin made it easier to transfer setups between devices. Haven’t tried apps but was able to transfer screen setups this way - forget exactly details as been a bit but I know I did it.

That makes sense. Maybe this CIQ app provides you want? https://apps.garmin.com/...d6-b0cd-59318b1cd81d

I've used another CIQ app, AppBuilder to make custom calculated fields. I think it would work for the gears, but for a single field I think it would have to cycle between displaying front ring and rear cog. Plus you'd have to dive into the CIQ/FIT SDK to pull the variables needed.

Thx, I saw that one too, but it seems to "calculate" the gear you are in. The Clear Gears app talks to Di2 so it "knows" what gear you are in. If the app needs to "calculate" the gear, it's going to have some trouble with telling apart certain gear combos that give essentially the same gain ratio, e.g. 52/23 and 36/16.

I'm certainly not an app developer, but I would think this would be one of the easiest apps to write, all you are doing is looking for two pieces of data from the Di2 feed and you show it on the screen.

Sorry. I missed that detail.

I thought on the 520 you can show gear info as native fields without needing ciq, what you want is under gears: gear combo.
