A research vessel has just found the wreck of the USS Hornet, sunk at the Battle of Santa Cruz on 27 Oct 1942. The USS Hornet (CV-8) is famous for launching the Doolittle Raid, as well as participating the Battle of Midway. The video above is pretty cool in that they show a sailor from the Hornet his gun station that he was manning during the battle in which the Hornet was sunk. The Hornet was the last large American carrier sunk by enemy forces.

USS Enterprise takes the cake for 1942 (and the entire war), but USS Hornet saw a lot of action in the six months from showing up in the Pacific until being sunk (Apr-Oct 1942).

Yeah, it's pretty amazing that the Enterprise and the Saratoga survived the entire war.

My grandfather flew B-25s in WWII......not off the Hornet. But, way back when, he gave me his copy of the book 30 Seconds Over Tokyo. Its a pretty cool and chilling story of the Hornet and the B-25 Doolittle raid....great reading.

When we rebadged the 77th Bomb Squadron to the 34th Bomb Squadron (“Thunderbirds”) in 2002, we invited 2 of the members of the Doolittle Raid to come and be a part of it. The 34th BS was one of the squadrons that had members in the raid. Got to have dinner with them, an absolute delight to meet them. There is only one Doolittle “Raider” left, and that is Doolittle’s copilot, who was with us that night. I still have a 34th BS patch signed by both of them.
