Running in Vegas?
I'm heading out there tomorrow for a long weekend, and I was wondering if there's anywhere decent to run (nothing epic, just 6-7 miles)? I'm staying on south part of the strip - should I just run around town or is it worth getting an Uber out to Red Rock or somewhere in the desert?

I prefer the treadmill when in Vegas. Too many people walking around unless you go really early in the morning and then you deal with the freaks.

Red Rock is great, but you will spend more time in the car than running 6-7 miles.

Its also pretty cold in the morning these days so plan accordingly if you are going to run outside.

Agreed

Running the strip sucks from a workout perspective, but provides lots of entertainment... So, I just run the strip.

If I have taken in enough of Vegas for the trip, then I run on the treadmill. The gyms are typically pretty nice.

I always plan on red rock but never pull the trigger given time constraints. Even for longer runs I find my was north or south of the strip and the running gets easier (normal city running vs congested pedestrian areas).

I stayed at the MGM Grand the last two times I was there and it was almost exactly a 7 mile round trip from the MGM to the Stratosphere.

You have to be out there early though. Not normal people early like 5am, but Vegas-early like before 8am. The strip is far too crowded after that and you won't be able to run. I tried to run around 10am once and gave up after two blocks.

Red Rock will be a 60-75 minute round trip drive so I don't see the point in traveling for over an hour to do an hour run.

Agree with the others- just run the strip. I just got back from a work trip in LV, and I was still on East Coast time so ran at around 5/5:30 in the morning. A few runners out there, some revelers still going, a few lung-full breaths of second-hand marijuana smoke, but I always enjoy running the strip and actually look forward to it on these trips.

If you head up past the Stratosphere and back and you catch the sunrise over the mountains on your way back it's pretty spectacular. In that section just be aware of your surroundings, watch your footing and don't wear your earbuds ( plenty of music from the casinos anyway).

Have been there last November. Did 2* 6am runs in Vegas (started at Venetian). Pretty easy, neither freaks nor tourists. However, I did not stay all way on the strip but made a loop. One run going south on the strip down to the airport and going back on Koval. The other one going north on the strip, returning on Paradise. Both were good runs.

Other than that, if you want to do something special, have a car, time and legs for challenging 13 miles: I went to Valley of Fire (1-hour ride), north of Vegas. Early morning. Ran the state park road from the visitor's center (8 miles road) + trails (5 miles). Fantastic views and nature.

Running the strip in the early morning is an experience.

If you have the time, I would highly recommend the riding in the Red Rock Canyon area. You could take an Uber to Las Vegas Cyclery or another shop in the Summerlin area and ride from there.

I am cheap and I usually stay towards the north end near the convention center. There I can run the strip all way to where it splits and then come back, or run the loop - ie the back road to the strip to the Trump hotel to the back road etc.

Another option - you can drive or uber/lyft to Henderson and run the Silverman 70.3 loop. It is a pretty hard work out.

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

i stay at the Tropicana every July for work. I loop the airport , exactly ten miles.
its very hot , run at 5 am . i dont like the strip but do it as well. running around the street access and elevators gets old quick but def. try it for the experiencing.
bring water and money to buy more water at a store you will need it.

The sunrise sounds like a plan, thanks! I'm an early riser and I'll be on east coast time so I should be able to beat the crowds in the morning.

Treadmill for me is the best choice....The challenge with the strip is all the ups and downs via stairs to cross streets, etc....I always have the best intention of trying to get outside of the city to run but the time is never worth it.

Post back with what you actually end up doing. I will be in Vegas for a week later this month and am trying to plan what to do for my runs as well. I will be at the Rio so may just head west on Flamingo rather than head towards the strip.

Red Rock is amazing but it's a long drive out there. We just stayed at the Venetian and the workout area was excellent. Plenty of treadmills. I'd say if you're only going 6-7 the treadmill is your best bet. Then go have breakfast at Hash House a Go Go. ;)

How do you people actually "run" the strip? I used to, but now its such a minefield of pedestrian overpasses and escalators, it damn near impossible to just get out and run (unless you go towards Old Vegas and it gets a bit sketchy after you get passed the Wynn.) My recommendation is to run on the road parallel to the strip on the back side of the hotels. Nothing to write home about scenery wise, but you have decent sidewalk. You cold also turn towards the airport and get long stretches of sidewalk as well. The UNLV track is also a possibility and close to the strip.

If you're willing to drive a little bit, the Pittman Wash Trail is decent for running.

If you're coming from the strip, I'd park at Pecos Legacy Park (150 N Pecos Rd, Henderson, NV 89014) and run east on the trail. It should get you close to 6 miles round trip without leaving the trail.

I'm there every June for a week for a conference. Nothing more entertaining than running along the strip in the morning. I usually leave from my hotel and just head a direction. Like others have said, just make sure you're out early enough to avoid the tourists, and still catch the hardcore partiers stumbling home, or the hookers getting thrown out of casinos.

For a longer run (10 miles), simply run around the perimeter of the airport. If you go clockwise, once you are past the main entrance and the NE corner area, it is mainly uninterrupted running (although, you may want to run on the far side of the street on the south side).

A shorter option from the strip is to run the sidewalks out and around UNLV. I usually head east on Flamingo to either Paradise or Maryland, then south to Tropicana and back to the strip. once you are off the strip, the sidewalks are mostly empty.

I go 2x a year for work, and the last couple times have run around UNLV take the strip (so that you do get some of the fun) to Harman and then straight down past the Hard Rock and you will be into the university. Also you can swim there for I think $10/day or $25 for a monthly membership.

Head south on I15 and take the Blue Diamond West. Take that for 5 miles or so and it'll run you into some nice hills or at least nicer neighborhoods.

If you're out there early when there's hardly anyone on the strip the pedestrian overpasses and stairs aren't that big a deal. Consider the stairs part of the workout. There's a section that does corral you into a shopping center, so it's a little weird running through the mall for a couple hundred feet. I recall that being on the west side of the strip when crossing over from the east side when heading north. That might have been a temporary thing due to construction though.

Yes, the old part of the strip after the Wynn is sketchy.

I tend to run shorter distances, but Sunset park just east of the airport is nice for a run. Just meander around all the various paths in the park. I always have a car, but it is a short cab/uber from the strip.

When I stay on the south end, I just head south down Las Vegas Blvd. Once you’re past the Mandalay Bay the traffic thins out and it’s really not bad. Sidewalks are wide and there aren’t really any pedestrians. Head out 3-4 miles and turn back. Easy.

I have been to Vegas once and went out for a run with a colleague. Apart from the Strip part it was ok - very flat. Until I tripped on the almost invisible remains of a street sign pole and fell pretty hard on my shoulder and elbow.

My friends thought it was hilarious, though, as it happened right in front of Hooter’s HQ and they figured I had lost focus on the road in front of me...
