Riding from/near Barcelona
I searched, and lots of threads about IM Barcelona but none really answering my question.

Front-end of a work trip, I have 4 nights there first weekend in March, and will be riding. Have been to Girona a couple times, so that is an option.

But if possible, would like to stay somewhere more near or in Barcelona and ride from there. Would save time the day I leave with getting back to the airport. No idea what it would be like to stay in the city somewhere and ride out from there, or somewhere else that is closer in than Girona.

So ... anyone who's spent some time or lived there who might advise?

thanks.

I have spent a few weeks on business in Sitges which is south of Barcelona. It is about 30 minutes to the Barcelona airport. It is cool little beach town. Lots of hotels and restaurants. I did not cycle but it is small town so should be easy to get out of town. Nice beaches for swimming.

thanks for the recommendation. I actually stayed in Sitges last time I went to Girona, last night before leaving, because it was closer to the airport. Was also looking at Castelldefels which is also on the beach. Wondering then just what the riding from there would be like. I'll be looking at doing 4-5 hours each day, weather permitting.

Just from a bit of googling seems like there are smaller villages and some quieter roads once you get more inland.

It's a fair mount away, but if you were looking for good riding, I have a friend who lives in Marbella and says the riding is amazing. I visited him last summer and we did a great ride into the mountains and the white villages (Istan). He often rides with some of the Tour riders off season, including Froome, etc. I'm sure he'd help you if you wanted to go that far. An extra bonus; he opened a gorgeous Mexican restaurant that looks amazing.

Yes, I recall that you mentioned this the last time I posted looking for advice on Spain :-)

I ended up going to Tucson instead for that trip (back in Dec). And I looked at going to Marbella for this one, but the connections weren't going to work out (I have to go to Brussels right afterward, and BCN was the easiest option)

That is on my list though!

Ah, sorry to be redundant! I'm looking for a training trip as well, but likely will be here in the US. I'm envious of your trip and hope you find a good fit.

Hi! There are mainly three directions you can ride to depending on the type of riding you want to do.

If you want to go flat then North towards Girona/France following the "national" road (N-2 / N-II) or you can go South towards Sitges. The N-II is busier with cars but full of cyclists on the weekend. The road to Sitges has a cool hilly section following the coast with a great view near the end.

If you want some climbing, the closest you have is the Tibidabo climb which is in Barcelona itself, if you want something longer the most famous is Collformic (15,4km - 815m) but there are several on that area.

Some examples of tracks:
- North, from Barcelona to Calella (Ironman 70.3 Barcelona): https://www.wikiloc.com/...lona-calella-3049185
- South, from Barcelona to Sitges and further: https://www.wikiloc.com/...rboc-131116-15482357
- Barcelona - Tibidabo: https://www.wikiloc.com/...-collserola-10635094

BTW, as you can see the Wikiloc site is full of routes you can check and download to follow the track.

Awesome, thanks so much for the suggestions! I will check out the Wikiloc site.

As I am less than 2 weeks away now, I have already found a place to stay outside of the city in Vilafranca del Penedes. Someone I know had recommended that to me, and it turned out there was a place there where I could rent a nice road bike, to avoid the hassle of bringing mine.

It looks like there are some nice routes to ride from that area too (including towards Sitges).
