You can/would poke the brush through the rubber slits. I don't worry too much as I only use water / nuun, then rinse well with plain water and dry. If you had energy drink in there it would be a mare I suspect.

I've not found a way to remove the cap/rubber slit. Not saying it can't be done, but I've had a good fiddle and it's not shown any inclination to come apart.
