Amateur Diagnosis Needed For my Knee...
First, I’m going to get this looked at on Monday.

Last Tuesday I tripped in my own driveway and landed hard on my left knee. First photo shows the initial aftermath. Second photo shows the height of the swelling (not much to be honest). I’ve stayed off of it, barely even walked on it.

Symptoms:
1. No throbbing or continuous pain when sitting or laying down.
2. I can stand up and even put all of my weight on the leg with only mild discomfort
3. I can hobble around. I cannot walk normally. Bending my knee hurts a lot. It’s like there’s pressure on the top of the kneecap.
4. I can rotate my leg inward (toward my other leg) and outward with only mild discomfort
5. I can manipulate my knee cap without too much discomfort.

Tightness/discomfort/pain when trying to walk hasn’t really improved. Any ideas of what I’m looking at?

No pix.

Did you twist it or just land on it hard on the concrete?

I’ll fix the pics in a few minutes ... no twisting. Just a hard, direct impact.

one of the ways to tear an ACL or PCL ( from experience)
Wait about 2-3 months in case it's just a sprain.

My guess is a severe bruise/bone bruise. I'm not a doctor, so....

But, with the lack of twisting, the worst case seems like a cracked patella, but probably just bad bruising that needs time to heal.

Some of my worst injuries have been bruises. By worst, I mean painful and longest to recover from. Heck I've got a finger thing that still hurts from 2 years ago.

My guess is 3 weeks ice/heat and light/increasing exercise before return to normal.

Just saw the pix. Was that taken the day of? Or is that current (week out)? Pretty severe either way.

Severe bruise / bone bruise or cracked patella and / or tibial plateau all seem possible. I'm sure tendon or ligament strain or tear is also possible given the degree of impact implied by those pix.

Definitely need a doc.

That sucks.... Hoping for the best.

Immediately afterwards. Thanks for the insight. Looks like I’ll be doing a lot of pull work in the pool :/

Pic looks like the patellar tendon took at least a portion of that hit. The tightness and the pain bending your knee probably are there. If you're also having a hard time walking down stairs, that's the same area.

I'd still get to the doc to find out if you have a fracture, just in case.

short response from experience is - good that you're seeing a doc. (soon).

My experience from the stone age ('96)…

Crashed my brains out on my mt. bike. Pain from dirt rash, etc was so bad I didn't notice my knee pain. I broke my patella (lower portion). Little did I know it healed with a "hook" underneath. And, when I'd run I'd get tendon issues under the knee. I finally went to an ortho who showed me the x-ray and it was obvious. Good news was that the surgery was the easiest in the world. A little work with the equivalent of a Dremel tool and good to go. I ran the next day, like I was brand new. However, it would have been better to have not had it in the first place :-|

enjoy the journey,

OK, I mean that in the "macro" sense

I saw this on a white board in a window box at my daughters middle school...

Thanks. The irony in this is that I'd just finished an accident-free two-hour mountain bike ride and thought to myself "I should really order a set of knee pads and start wearing them".

Oops. Yeah those type of thoughts are a curse.

How many times have I said to myself.... "you know, I shouldnt be doing....<ouch! .... Shit, shit, shit>." followed by, "honey?! Can you drive me to the hospital?"

Well... Let's just say, more than 5.

Tennis elbow? Or maybe your patella tendon is bruised?

Can be a patellar fracture, which needs imaging to decide load tolerance and thus the intervention. Can also be just a contusion. One can set of a tendinopathy by landing hard on a tendon, but in my experiance they have a favourable natural history compared to the loading induced tendinopathies.
