How much sway do unsecured creditors have in the bankruptcy process when it comes to companies like these?
This guy Lampert certainly is the master of disaster when it comes to close calls, though there's a good argument to be made that he's the one who's brought on these disasters.

I'm surprised all his actual are legal. It seems like a conflict of interest.

I’m not sure. This article on Toys R US would seem to allude to the fact that they changed that outcome from what the vultures wanted- not that it was a great outcome- but perhaps a few more of those will stop the vultures from using this tactic?
ETA this article references secured creditors though not unsecured.
