Used Zipp 900 : please help me know if this is standard wearing ?
Hello,

I am going to buy a pair of second hand ( well, third hand wheels actually, used by a pro for one season then an AG for a year) Zipp 900 / 808 firecrest combo.
I want to know if this is ok, as I have never seen those wheels before :

Thank you very much !

It's hard to tell from the pictures. But the big dimples are not wear, but where something struck the wheel. Those are probably OK.

The other picture shows what might be the beginning of delamination on the brake brack? That one worries me, but it's really hard to tell what's going on from just one picture. Might try the coin tap test around the top of each rim and listen for any change in sound?

Edit: Ah, it sounds like you don't have them in hand, nevermind about the coin tap test.

Personally, I'd avoid buying that wheel.

I'd avoid buying both. As said below, those big dimples are damage on the facesheet of the disc, but since carbon fiber doesn't just deforn like metal does, that means there are cracks in there somewhere. At the very least it's no longer bonded to the core in those areas.

Thank you !

Those marks are both on the 900, i didn't post any picture from the 808 because I didn't see anything wrong.

In any case, I wasn't going to buy them without seeing them myself, it's not far from me but I was just wondering if it was worth. I can still go see them, but if its a no-no...I will not bother.

Here are all the pics I received :

It takes a substantial hit to make an impression in a 900 disc. They are not carbon fiber but a hard composite sandwiching a foam core. Based on its location and the number of dents it almost looks like it from the inside heel of a shoe unclipping.

That is just glue on the brake track and can be cleaned off with acetone and the small dents in the disc are fine.

They're carbon fiber facesheets bonded to a honeycomb core

If this is just glue, it doesnt matter at all. Ill try to see them and get a good loock at that.

Concerning the bumps, I am unsure... I saw people with 5cm holes ride those wheels without any problem.

imswimmer328 your opinion is that the carbon fiber is no longer supported by the core ? You think that there is a weakness that could lead to a failure ?

I can get both for 1000€ or get a pair of the same wheels in a perfect condition ( 200Km) for 1500€. I'm just wondering if the extra 500€ is worth it.

The fact that there are dents means there is internal damage. There are a number of possible forms that damage could take: internal cracking, delamination, core disbond, etc, most likely some combination of all of those. As the disc is used, those cracks will grow. It's possible that you'd be able to ride the wheels without issue, all i can say is there's no way I'd buy or ride them in that condition. The brand new ones are a much better idea.

I’ve been riding a 900 disc with a similar dent for two years. Have not had any issue

So I went to see them as it was really close, and I chose not to take them, I took a picture of the dents in the wheel : http://www.noelshack.com/2018-47-3-1542822490-img-20181119-192221.jpg

Braking track was perfect however.
