What's wrong with my sycamore?
Quote | Reply
I have seven on my property, and two of them have these vertical slashes in the trunk that appear to be weeping sap. Been this way for a year or so. These are very mature trees (over 50 years?), and no other visible issues (other than a maddening amount of bark all over the ground, and dropping leaves starting in July...).

Could be this, of course if it is a homeless guy doing it, according to JSA it would not be a crime...(-;

Dunno if that's helpful. You've probably already seen it.

I've passed your photo and description to some knowledgeable friends of mine. I'll let you know if they have any ideas/input.

In the meantime, maybe start here: http://plantclinic.cornell.edu/...ts/barksplitting.pdf

ask your county agricultural extension agent. It's their job to know (or find the answer to) stuff exactly like this.

A friend of mine has a sycamore tree and said his had anthracnose. It can kill the trees in some cases and in others, only minor damage. It's fungal disease and in his case, he was told to just clean up any of the debris from the tree to ensure the fungus doesn't spread.

As with any true professional, the consensus from the arborists here in San Diego is a shoulder shrug followed by a recommendation that you retain a local arborist. That said, Steve's recommendation to contact the local extension office is spot on.

Edit: Here: https://njaes.rutgers.edu/county/

I'm surprised the extension offices are organized by county, and not exit number. ;-)
