i think if we're all just honest about this, each tribe has its propensities. mine, for example, if you ask which tribe has folks most guilty of annoying someone to death, its the liberals, with its microaggessions and safe spaces and ruining my dinner by standing over me and whining.

just, if BK starts off my morning with a thread handed him by his paymasters about a microaggressed kid getting a teacher fired, i'm not going to run around with my hair on fire looking for a right wing analog. i will unhappily own this unfortunate cohort as part of my tribe, while hoping they'll go join the green party and if that means we lose elections then fine.

while my tribe has the most annoying people, yours has the most violent. every sort of crazy (batshit, tin foil hat wearing, etc.) is overwhelmingly to be found among the conservatives, as well as the folks way more likely to shoot up a school or a church; send a bomb to somebody; shave their heads and gang up on a protester and beat the living jesus out of him.

yes, you can point out that one guy who shot up the softball game. and when it comes to princesses, i can point to JSA. but in the main, we have our unfortunates, and you have yours. no use trying to wiggle out of that.

I should probably start paying rent for all the space I occupy in your head.

I think Dan refuses to see the reality borne out in the recent hidden tribes polling, that two thirds of people out here are in the exhausted middle; and seems more interested in forcing people to be in one the of two diametrically opposed ends.

either i'm not explaining it right, or you're not reading it right, or you're purposely distorting. i don't know. on the assumption that i'm not writing it right, let me take another stab.

no. i think the precise opposite of what you said. what i feel is that we unfortunately find ourselves ruled by the tribes we've let ourselves be locked into. this is a bad thing, not a good thing. 80 percent of everyone here takes pains to proclaim themselves free of their tribes, but these proclamations belie the truth that everyone's posting history displays.

you're in the exhausted middle. i'm in the exhausted middle. fine. but... really? yes, i find the left wing's penchant for political correctness, safe spaces, mob mentality, a big problem. but where are my sensibilities? my tribe is on the left.

your tribe is on the right. yes, i know from your postings that you have trouble with what you see from the right. but, the gravity pulling you is from that tribe.

the only obvious group of folks i can see who have extricated themselves from their tribe are the still-conservative ex-republicans (max boot, george will, steve schmidt, joe scarborough).

i'm not stating what i think should be. i'm stating what is. i have no doubt that the majority of people out there (in the polling) are just like people in here: they don't profess to being a part of a tribe. but they, you, me, we're answering out of our frustration, and without any real self-awareness. i think an interesting experiment would be a test designed to uncover where we really sit, and i think the results would be: fiercely tribal, but dismayed by our own tribalism.

You distort more than anyone else in the LR. You are also more divisive than just about anyone else in the LR. You desperately create this "with me or agin me" position and castigate posters into one camp or another. You have done this since the election with increasing frequency.

There are a lot of us in the middle who have been forced to take sides because there are only two parties. When the other side criticizes every single thing done by the opposing side, it gets old and causes push-back, which does not equate to the wholesale support of what one side does.

A couple weeks ago, I had this discussion with my mother - a rabid liberal retired teacher who loves her son, but hates his political party. I explained it like this:

What party is left for me? I want every gay couple in America to have the right to get married and to do so with AR-15s strapped to their backs with 30 round magazines, should they so desire, knowing they will be legally free to have an abortion, if need be, paid for by health insurance that is not mandated by the federal government.

That's the world in which a lot of us live, but, we don't get this option. So, we pick the team with which we can live and just try to go about our lives.

There's some serious "You have to be on the correct side" stuff going on out there. A Twitter personage, Bruce Carroll, who goes by the handle "Gay Patriot," was just permanently banned by the social media tech giant. For what, we're all still trying to figure out. The only thing it appears to be is that he held "unapproved" patriotic and conservative views, while being gay, and is being punished for it.

"In case you don't know what's going on here...

...Bruce Carroll, aka GayPatriot, conservative policy dude, all around good guy, and a friend of mine...

Twitter suspended his account last week, giving no reason. A bunch of us raised a a stink about it, so Twitter today finally gave a non-reason. Management claimed in an email to Bruce, without citing any examples, that he had engaged in "hateful conduct." Whatever that means. Twitter's email also announced that they had permanently banned Bruce's account, and his backup account, and that they "will not be restored."

In other words, Bruce had been 86'd-for-life from the "social" media site to which he'd lent so much humor and spark.

I think the reason for his suspension is that Bruce is gay and puts up with no progressive bullshit. Like a whiter, gayer, and (I assume) not nearly as rich Kanye West, the Left can't tolerate any minority who fails to hew to their orthodoxy. And the far-left progressives who run Twitter simply can't allow a voice to minorities who stray from the plantation -- certainly not with an election just around the corner."

When I learn of actions like this (and they're becoming increasingly notable and depressingly ever more common these days) I begin to wonder just who the wannabe totalitarians really are. SMDH.

going on where? here? all that gets asked here is that you all don't just routinely post hate propaganda, and that you act in a civil fashion, and the bar i set for civility is pretty easy to hurdle in this forum.

Can you cite some examples of this “hate propaganda”?

I want to be sure I don’t post any of that so I’d like to know what it is.

A link to some would be nice. Thanks.

Oh, I thought “routinely post” meant that it’s something that should be easy to go back and find.

My bad.

what i mean is, i'm happy to host the occasional propaganda. but if somebody makes it a mission here to routinely dump hate propaganda then i'm unlikely to host that. from either side. i can't remember anything like that from you.
