Great write up and congrats for toughing that out

Sure I saw you out there with Walter (he is a good friend ) as I was leaving the energy lab

I used this sweat test - I am not that big (156 and 6 foot on race day ) - I sweated 4 pints in 45 mins in an 85 degree run on my test and lost (extrapolated) 3000 mg per hour of sodium , classed as severe

I drank roughly 3 bottles per hour of Gatorade on the bike and about 2 on the run - 4 salt tablets per hour on the bike also but struggled with the base salt on the run

I had the pins and needles all over my body including my face by the time I made into the med tent

Only lost 7 lbs which is great for me and still melted on the second half of the run - it was the hottest I have ever been on three occasions

Walter was spot on , to do well in Kona you need to experience it and even then , if you are on the larger side , it will always be a struggle on the run in my opinion

Cheers

Steve

Thanks Steve. Walter and I were together for a good 5 miles or so. He dropped me somewhere in the Energy lab. I lost 11 lbs during the race. Frankly I was surprised it wasn't more based on how I felt. Hope to one day get back and make a better run at it. I feel like I learned so much this time.

Racing in Kona for the first time this year and I've been reading every race report I can find while I miserably melt in the sauna sessions.

I love this report and how raw it is. I've had small glimpses of what you felt but nothing sustained for a couple hours. You highlighted a lot about what keeps us coming back for more, whether it's following a great result or one where we dig as deep as we ever thought was possible (like this race for you). Thanks for putting this out there and I hope you get another shot at Kona!

IM_Roycer81,

downloaded your RR and reading it and your comments on the hip hip injury has me thinking, I have the same damn injury.
Just a constant dull pain in the ass/hip area and just will not go away. Into my second month now and have Ohio 70.3 next
weekend. I do plan to race, and will do the run with a walk a mile run a mile until I feel I can do back to back miles.

PT did not do anything but press on my lower back. I have no back pain at all. Chiropractor does my back adjustments.
So I am going to a massuse once a week to get agressive and work that upper hamstring were the pain is.

Any input or advice........damn I will take it. I have Kona in just over 2 months and I am in serious trouble here. It looks like
its going to be a very very long night and painful one at that on the Queen K. I am determined to finish this race.

Thanks
