I was pretty much there at my running peak... on a flat road course. She would have smoked me then, and we wouldn't even be in the same zip code now.

I ran for Madison Central High, which is now Old Bridge High School. I am very familiar with this course and the infamous Bowl. That is a sick time on that course. 17:30 was my best there, and it gutted me.

Well...show up to the Mesa 10k and get wreck by a 9 yr old girl...there was a 9 yr old the first year I did that I found out was a travel soccer player. Bonding events for her and her mother were road races.

Up until the last few years, I could have answered yes to this question having maintained pretty good fitness coaching and running with my high school kids, but 16:21 for a not-flat course is pretty phenominal. Fortunately, I have had some time to get used to this idea after I got pummelled by Claudia Lane last year at Foot Locker West Regional (by time, not in the same race). Heck, I did not even beat all the girls in my own open, non-high school race there.
Someone else commented on some of these fast runners disappearing and even Claudia Lane, who appeared to me to be navigating some of the young runner issues pretty well, ended up injured and out of competition during track season of her junior year. If I was giving advice to any of these young girls, or the guys in similar situations, I would counsel them to have fun running and try not to get caught up in the hype and to set their expectations realistically. Runners who run these kinds of times at that age are in a tough spot because they are not often going to run very much faster. I researched the top 10 high school 1600 times from five years ago and looked at their improvement over four years of college and it averaged 5 seconds. I suspect that is hard for some of these athletes that are told they are going to be the next great Olympian and they turn out to be a very good college runner instead. I hope this girl and those like Claudia Lane go on to enjoy running later in life as a positive lifestyle contributor. That was what I told my runners when we talked about goals.

Katelyn set another course record on Saturday: 16:52:97 at Sunken Meadow Park. Previous record 17:45 by 3 time PAC 12 Champion, and current pro Aisling Cuffe.

That’s an unexpected crazy start to her season.

we had a 9 year old girl swim the 400 SCM in 5:16.4 last year, also did an 11:18 800 SCM. She's pretty well rounded and is fast at everything except breastroke and is well above average in that. 2:48 LCM 200 IM 2 days after she turned 10.

It was fun watching her in high school, sh was struggling with injury for the past couple of years and also timing of growth can be so cruel for younger female runners, its great to see her make the leap and stay super fast.

Holy shit. The way she broke the runner behind her was amazing. She looked so in control, so smooth. The women in second was massively suffering. What a run.

That is what I found so impressive about her win. She was totally in control the whole time.

If you click on the twitter link again, scroll down some and you'll see an absolutely amazing race with the hurdles. I won't give anything away. But, you gotta check it out.
