Reports say it's supposed to be released "later this year." Does anyone have a sense of when "later" might be?

They are Beta testing now so my guess would be late Fall.

an article I read quoted a VP as saying it would be holiday time of 06 so sounds like very end of the year. I don't know if I would hold my breath

Here's my problem: I work off a desktop we bought in 2001/2002. It runs on XP, but it's starting to slow way down even though I do continual maintenance on it. I know that I need to upgrade machines, but I was hoping to wait until Vista came out so I didn't have to deal with an operating system upgrade. XP upgrades have been hard enough -- Service Pack 2 crashed my computer. Then again, I'm not sure I can wait 18 months to upgrade my machine.

Thanks; those are some great suggestions. I'm an arm chair tweaker, not a professional, but I've learned to be patient and I've also learned how to undo any mistakes I make.

I have a suggestion that can maybe help -
Move to a Mac.
I've had mine for about 3 years now and with the normal upgrades that come automatically I have never had any slowing problems, crashes, or any major patches required. I know some people are diehard Windows types, but I do all my work at home on my Mac and have no problem taking it into work where everything is Windows. The initial investment might be a little pricey, but it has certainly paid off for me in decreased frustration.

"Ok you, you mac lovers, flame away. I deserve it. ;) "
No flaming here. I completely understand why you might want a Windows machine. Personally, I am happy with my G4. The operating system runs smoothly, I've never once had it lock up or had to reboot or anything like that, and I can still run Windows software like Word and Excel on it. There's less software available in general, but there's an awful lot of good stuff out there. Plus it looks cooler. ;-)
