Just my .02 but I vote for leaving off the IM branded races. Everyone knows about them and where to find out about them. Plus they already get enough publicity on their own. The list of non-branded races is awesome though.

As for the Rogue...I’m not sure whether to be flattered or scared. Flattered because I am one of the primary organizers along with my training partner and also it is the most non-event event possible I think. Come and do as little as you want or as much as you want all for free. We set up the course and provide all of the on-course nutrition and support. Mainly meant as a way to get people to be comfortable in group settings and with the distance. Caused a bit of a ruckus with our local club for some reason but whatever. Ended up snowing on the day we were going to have it so had to cancel so hopefully better this year. Meant as a long training day primarily.

Scared because not sure what we would do if we had a couple hundred people commit to the fun since it is free but I’m sure we would figure something out. Last year had about 45 people prepared to join in the fun between tri, aquabike, and relay.

Hi Lschmitt,

I won't pretend that this list will be come a Bible or non branded races which leads to your supported training day being overwhelmed! But, it may, I hope it does. I can leave your eve of off the list if you like. Just let me know. I once ran a supported Ironman for a friend (the only racer) who just didn't quite have the dollars to get to a real event. It was great fun and a free event like yours absolutely has a place.

As for branded Vs non branded. I started this with an idea of getting the independent races all on file. There is so many great options outside of IM etc and they do get all the publicity anyway. I ended up merging them because I found it hard to decide where to draw the line. IM, Challenge, Toughman, HITS?

I think I will make filter for the non branded/independent races and publish that list as per your request and my initial feeling. I may leave HITS events on the list as I don't think they are known at all, but others will go.

Thanks for your 2 cents. Things are slowing down. Publication might come soon!

Feel free to leave it on. We think it has a place as well and was the whole reason for starting it. We had several people approach us saying that if we would market it more we could charge x amount and have a real race and get all these people to come which missed the entire point of it. We were tired of paying big money. We wanted to show people they could have fun without having to fork out big dollars. Yes you do get some additional things for the high entry fee of IM events but you also get a lot of fluff in my opinion. We are hoping to plan some other things in addition to Rogue that would follow the same premise of getting out and having some fun with an awesome group of people and pushing ourselves without having to pay two arms and a leg. As I said before if a bunch more people show up because of the list then so be it. We will make it work. If not we will just take the group we have and go out to have a fun day.

I think for North America the only house name is IM. The general triathlon population has no clue about Toughman, HITS, Challenge, etc. I think it would be fine to leave those on the list. I am really excited to see it once you get it finished up and hope it would be ok to post on our local tri club page and the Rogue website (in all its glory) just to further get the information out there about great but lesser known races. If I could be of assistance in any way feel free to let me know.

Great, I'll leave it on. I've gotten to know a few RDs over the years and they would probably advise you to keep it as is!

I'll keep the minor brands on the list too, I wasn't sure how well known they were here. I've just moved from Australia where Toughman doesn't exist but challenge has had an on and off presence. Given they have 1 US event and 3 in Mexico they aren't exactly big here.

You'd be welcome to share it on your club page, without the brand's the list will be about 100 races long. I haven't put exact dates (just the month) or places (other than the state) so the list is a little general but I have verified they exist and will to he best of my knowledge run in 2019. I have included the direct link to their websites though so information will be at people's fingertips. If you share it, perhaps credit me with my Instagram tag incase anyone were interested in following, that would be appreciated.

I'll let you.know if I need any help, but now I'm basically just waiting for no new races to be given to me in a 24 hour window to declare the list complete.

Great Floridian, run by the great folks at SommerSport, has full, 2/3 and 1/3 distance options. Located in Clermont, Florida. See greatfloridian.com

Thanks for compiling the list. Good work.

Final list attached. This message will also be placed in a new thread.

Thank you all for your contributions to the Non-branded Half distance race list. I have compiled the list and you can easily filter it by Month or State to find the best races for you. It became much longer than I ever expected it to be and includes races in Mexico, USA and Canada.

Why not use a website like 220 which offers similar lists? This list is to help promote independent races and I have personally checked that all of these will still run in 2019 (and hopefully beyond). The only exception to this is Beauty and the Beast which is undecided beyond Dec 2018 (so get down there and race this iconic event before it disappears). These races are largely suggested by local athletes who have done them and back them as being great events. Prices range from what you'd expect at a branded race to completely free (El Reno Rouge Triathlon). There are also many at the $100-150 price point. All direct links to the websites are included.

Most of the list are half distance races although some OD, Sprint or even Stage races crept in. For one reason or another I kept them, largely because I considered them iconic (such as Pigman Sprint or Sea to Summit).

Should you find this thread useful and enjoy using it, the best way to say thanks is to follow my triathlon related adventures through the links in my signature.

Happy racing in new places!

Kind regards,
Ryan

Just found this. I see it's a couple of years old. What happened to Ryan Waddington?

An updated version of this would be cool.

Nothing like reviving a thread that is many years old (again).

The document that's posted above still downloads but unfortunately is super out of date. I'll volunteer to rebuild it if this thread gains momentum again.

Would love suggestions for non-branded half(-ish) distance races May-June. Based in Boulder and driving is great, but wouldn't mind flying to practice flying with a bike. (St. George and Boulder are perfectly timed within this window, but I don't know that I want to race an IM-branded 70.3.)

These two are still around under new ownership, here are the new web addresses:

Patriot Half - June - MA https://www.outsiderendurance.com/patriot-half
Pilgrimman - September - MA https://www.outsiderendurance.com/pilgrimman

Additionally, Pumpkinman - September - ME dropped the half a few years back, now just Sprint and Olympic (numerous running race options the following day)

If you’re considering compiling races, please consider doing so on the sites “race calendar” instead of a thread that will get buried again.

As someone who moved to a new state this year, it’s very difficult to find local races if you aren’t already clued in. If people updated the race calendar with events in their area it would be incredibly beneficial to those new to the sport or those who are moving.

USAT already has this. I believe their term for a 70.3 is "Long"

Also, https://runningintheusa.com/...sport/find-by-state/ and https://www.trifind.com/. I rarely find that both of these sites are missing a race, at least in places I have lived.
