2018 Season in review
I wanted to take a step back and look at the actual work that I had completed over the course if 2018 (38 weeks) I added up the numbers and came to some totals and then looked at my overall results. The workout totals include the race distances and times below. This is my first full season doing triathlon after doing my first triathlon race last year, August 2017. I had done 3 marathons over the course of about a year from 2016-2017.

Any advice on the numbers below would be helpful. I want to have a successful off-season and prepare well for IMSR with hopes of going sub 10 hours. If that is even possible for me as an almost 34 year old male that has never done a full distance race. I know that my volume is going to have to increase...but I am not sure by how much.

Edit: This thing hates excel tables.

I am very happy with how my season went. I have been generally healthy compared to what I hear from a lot of people and what they are dealing with. I did miss two races due to scheduling conflicts, what can you do? I think the amount of work I put in is reflected in my results just want to know how much more is going to be required to go sub 10 and what I can do this off-season to become more injury resistant.

So you only averaged 5hrs a week? On first glance, I'd say you achieved well beyond what your training volume should net.
You either have some good background / genetics and/or really had some bigger build weeks/blocks that aren't reflected, Becuase perhaps you had some really low volume weeks in the offseason?

Either way, I'd say you had a solid year and certainly have way more room to grow, assuming you can logistically handle more training time. If you can average 10-12hrs a week, I'd guess your HIM could drop significantly, more into the 4:30-4:40 range.

Okay, I looked at it on a week by week basis. I had 5 weeks over the course of the year that I did 10-12 hours. I also had a few weeks where I only did 1-2 hours. This just made me realize how inconsistent I have been, sheesh. I had a lot of 4 hour weeks in there.

10-12 would be a major improvement. Heck...even 8.

My background was as a hockey player...and I wasn't even that good.

Great results with that volume!

do you use strava? If so, you should get on http://www.veloviewer.com to really start analyzing your efforts over time (and compare YoY)

from what I can tell, you appear to have a lot to gain on the swim - 105k isn't a bad amount of volume but 1.1 swim / week is definitely concerning. Swimming relies much more on frequency of workouts vs. the aggregate volume over time.

I would recommend that when you're >= 4 weeks from your "A" race, continue to swim as you swim, but for the 4 weeks leading up to your race try to "pyramid" your swim frequency -

week 1: 3-4 swims - 6-10k yards
week 2: 4-5 swims - 10-20k+
week 3: 4-5 swims - 10-20k+
week 4: 2-3 light swims 3-5k
Race

You'll peak nicely alongside your race
