I don't know to be honest. Maybe because Gomez is a very common surname in Spain and they use the second to avoid confusion? Other triathletes like Mola, Llanos or Raña only go by the first surname.

Macy’s is not a play by play... he complimented Alistair’s insights with criticism or praise for the athletes.
