Ben Kanute's Bike & Run Power File Share from 70.3 Worlds
Quote | Reply
Look for more details in a write-up I will do soon, comparing 2017 vs 2018 for Kanute, but these are some of the key data numbers for him at the 70.3 Worlds. Thought I would share this as an appetizer...(no, I'm not sharing all the numbers here, those will be in the article).

Wow. Great insights. Looking forward to reading your comparison to 2017. Ben had a terrific race though unfortunately it was clear pretty early on with the three super fast runners in the bike pack that he would only compete for 4th on that day. Still, very good time in the half marathon, I think. And great that he kept everybody else at bay.

One question that may be off topic: Is there a slipstream in running at the pace these guys were going. I was wondering about that because when I was doing intervalls a couple of days ago at a pace of around 3:45 per km the wind felt substantial. Gomes ran right behind Frodeno for quite a while. Is there an advantage to that other than psychological?

How in the world this guy keeps his legs turned over at those rates, on both the bike and run, is beyond me

VI of 1.05 with only 1650 ft of climbing. This says a lot about the group dynamics of the pro race.

Standard deviation of power differences from 2017 and 2018: (shows in Today’s Plan, but not in the share image)

2017: 63 Watts
2018: 79 Watts

That really tells you the difference between him being solo off the front, and in the lead pack. Difference of over 20% in the SD!

Silly question, but is he riding/running strictly to power ranges or is he pushing what he can at the moment?

Hey Jim

What does Ben wt. I suspect about 68 kg .

325 watts averaged.

Also

Did Ben always ride that cadence or do you work on it.

Good guiding jim and Ben good processing. I think that result was nearly a perfect race.

Technique will always last longer then energy production. Improve biomechanics, improve performance.

Actually, that’s for the whole file, including walking after the race before he shut the watch off. 1:12 is 5:30 pace, so with the extra seconds, he was about 5:33 pace.

And he still got beat by 6 mins by Frodo. Amazing.

How much does he weigh? 330w is only 6:00/mi for me. Wondering if I’m just that inefficient.

Very close. He was about 69.5 for the race. He always rides high cadence, and I am a big believer in it, (see my book, Triathlon 2.0 for more details). Thanks for the kind words.

Have you read my book, Run With Power? There I introduce the concept of how fast you relative to the Watts you produce is the key to learning about your run ability and tracking how it improves. Of course, I’m biased, but I would say it is recommended reading.

So yes, your biomechanics are a big issue, if you weigh the same as him, (69.5 kg).

Haven’t read it but will check it out. I’m quite a bit heavier at 74.5kg, but would still like to analyze my efficiency.
