Benefit of Heat Acclimization when race day ends up not being hot

Hi,

Just curious if there are any performance benefits to heat acclimatization work if the day ends up not being terribly hot/humid. Simply curious about what possible value there is to having done two weeks worth of it.

I've done heat acclimation for my last two marathons (sauna time; running while wearing extra layers). Both marathons ended up far cooler than expected. I've decided that was one of the ironic benefits of heat acclimation....

Core temperature rise is a potential performance limitation in a wide variety of conditions, event dependant.
As ambient temperature and humidity increase, it just moves up the list of things likely to slow you down.
Therefore, yes, acclimatization is worthwhile.

Additionally, the increase in Cardiac Output from plasma volume expansion etc. is worthwhile.

also add to the list of heat acclimation benefits:
tighter junctions in the gut epithelium which typically lead to less digestion issues when you bombard it with crap all race
"hormetic" effect of almost every cellular process= all things are improved when they are slightly stressed with heat and/or exercise
upregulation of heat shock proteins= great immunity to bad things and greater tolerance of a very stressful day (Ironman)

Interesting replies.

I have been training for IM Wales in Houston. By the end of some workouts the air temperature has been 103. Add the heat index and direct sun and I guess it could 'feel' 110 plus.

The other day we had a shower and the temperature dropped to 77 degrees. I turned the heater on.

My concern is how cold I might feel becoming adapted to high temperatures and then racing in the 60's.

I might just have a shot a qualifying for Kona!

Once, I was fast. But I got over it.
