Formula for replacing longer runs with short/frequent runs
Quote | Reply
I am able to get a run in over my lunch break, most days. Anywhere from 30-45 minutes.

Most triathlon training plans that I've used (most frequently use Trainer Road plans) has a 3 run week: a shorter tempo run, a Base+Strides run, and then a long run. Generally, I do the long run on the weekend or in an early morning.

The "strides" run is generally Rx'd at anywhere from 65-80 minutes (in a 70.3 plan).

If I run 4-5x's per week over lunch I effectively knock out that tempo run. From a training/effectiveness standpoint, does my 2X 40 minute runs equate to one longer run of 70 minutes or so? How would you formulate this?

As a time crunched athlete, I'm not trying to cut any corners, but rather more effectively use my time. Is there an "accepted" formula for frequency vs distance?

2x 40 is fine for replacing a 70. But it doesn't replace you long run 20k+. On that run the idea is to stress legs and energy systems in a way you can't on a shorter workout.

I think this is highly dependent on what your goals are and what background you're coming from.

If you have experience at longer distances then it should be adequate for a HM at the end of a 70.3. If you're new to mid-/long-distance triathlon and/or running and want to blag a 70.3 on that run schedule then you're either going to have to pace conservatively or you're going to be walking!

A bit more background would be helpful, but it's doable.

Doing more long slow runs will make you successful at running... long and slow.
You need to keep the speed and tempo.

What's more effective is doing two Z2" runs in one day. Personally I do my long days on Friday. Peak I'm out for 1.5 hours before work and slip in 60 minutes over lunch.
Best scenario for my busy life.
