Falmouth Road Race-Insights?
My wife is running Falmouth Road Race for the first time, Does anyone have insights into the course or other "need to know things"?

I've gathered that the first 3 miles are a bit hilly, then fairly flat until a steep hill before the finish.

Any other thoughts?

Seeded or unseeded bib? If it's an unseeded bib, be prepared for it to just be a training jog - there's too many people for you to truly race it.

If seeded - the first three miles are more rolling than truly hilly. Narrower roads. Tough to run tangents and very easy to burn energy attempting to weave through people.

The next three are flat, flat, flat. Depending on the wind that day it's usually either a cross-breeze or a head wind. Use somebody to draft.

You make a couple of turns before you get to the world's most painful hill. Hammer down once you make that second right hand turn and all the way through the line.

Agree - too many people in too tight of a space to truly race it unless running seeded. Gentle rolling terrain the first few miles (take a moment to appreciate the view going up and around Nobska Light!) and then it flattens out as it comes out of the wooded area just before Surf Drive Beach. The turns are tight too, especially after the beach going up and around the harbor in the last 2 miles. The hill just before the finish is short and steep but doable.

Thanks.
Elite Race, actually. Ought to be about 38 Flat, depending.
Good to know that the first 3 are more rolling than hilly. Hoping we can find someone to drive the course with her.

Noted on the drafting.

How long is the final hill? We got some good quality hill training in with my hope being that she's confident going into it.

It starts going false flat up once you turn away from the beach. The real kick comes with about a half mile to go. You do need to have drive over the top (it’s a downhill sprint to the finish).

There used to be a bar called The Casino By the Sea at the finish. Was owned by a cranky old prick named Sweeney. I was a bar tender and dj there. It's condos now, I think.

Anyway, the night before the road race a local band, Steve Smith and the Nakeds was playing there. We were running in the road race but decided it would be relaxing pre race to pop in and see the Nakeds for a hydrating libation. You may remember the Nakeds and their hit, "I'm Huge and the Babes Go Wild"? Maybe not.

So one beer turned into 14 and dancing, singing with the band to I'm Huge, with beer being poured on each other. We then poured out into the street at closing and got into a huge brawl which was not our fault. Three of us ended up in the local jail. I kept telling the cops they needed to let us go so we could rest up for the race which went off at 7 30, I think. They laughed at us. It wasn't that funny. Another friend showed up pretending to be our lawyer and they threw him in with us. Once you've been on the inside, man......it changes you. That's all I can say.

They released us on our own recognizance at 6 am. We caught a cab back to the beach house, had him wait while we ran in and changed up and he then drove us to Woods Hole, stopping at a 7/11 for Gatorade on the way. Too little too late I think for that. We jumped out at the start as it was going off and "ran" the race. It was very humid and hilly and fast. One other convict puked in front of a family of 4 by the side of the road, another convict had a massive bowel movement behind a house which was not welcomed by the convict or the owner of the house, and this convict has never been the same on a cellular level since. Walking back after the finish to the beach house I saw a cop from the night before and so I said hi. He said, holy sheet, you ran the race? I said, yeah, sort of. I bought him beers at the Casino that night. Good dude.....

Anyway, don't do this.

Hope this helps.

Hahaha! I do remember Steve Smith and the Nakeds, they played the Casino all the time and usually on road race weekend. There's always people who do that race hung over (including myself one year) and it usually doesn't end well.

True story - one year when my wife ran, a buddy and I dropped her off early before the race in Woods Hole and drove in town, stopping at Betsy's Diner (a must visit) for breakfast where we had plenty of time before we had to head towards the Heights to watch the finish from that last hill. A guy next to us at the counter had running gear on and a bib number, eating a big plate of eggs, home fries and bacon. I swear to God as we are watching the race later on, we see this same guy struggling up the hill (it was a hot humid day as it usually is each year) and he boots everywhere in the bushes as he gets to the top. Good times.

Just wanted to follow up on this because I'm pretty stoked.
She had a good race and ran 38:04. Being a terrible downhill runner, she got passed at the time for 4th and finished 5th over all and 1st American Female.

Nicely done. Great day for it where the humidity from yesterday cleared out.
